Jack Pearson may be gone in the present version of This Is Us, but he’s still one of the best characters on the show. Though he has his issues and isn’t a perfect person by any means, he is a wonderful husband to his wife Rebecca and an even better father to his three kids — Randall, Kevin, and Kate.
Because Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) has lived such an interesting life, there’s a lot to know about him and his complicated past. Here are five fast facts about the Pearson patriarch!
Jack is an avid Bruce Springsteen fan and proves it a number of times throughout the show. When driving his daughter to see Alanis Morissette, her favorite singer, Jack shows Kate the music of Springsteen. 1998 Super Bowl
We hate to bring this sad moment back up, but Jack actually died the night of the 1998 Super Bowl, which was played by the Denver Broncos and the Green Bay Packers. They accidentally left the slow cooker on, which resulted in the house catching on fire.
The night Jack met his eventual wife, Rebecca, inside a bar, he was actually planning on robbing the bartender. Jack was at a low point and didn’t have a lot of money, but he didn’t go through with robbing the place after he heard Rebecca singing on stage. The rest is history!
Jack has the exact same birthday as his three children, August 31. In fact, Jack turned 36 the day his three kids — Kevin, Kate, and Randall were born.
Jack decided to volunteer for the Vietnam War after his brother, Nicky, was drafted. Jack wasn’t able to be drafted due to medical reasons, but he wanted to volunteer so he could look after his little brother. But Jack died thinking his brother killed a young boy on purpose — and that is a huge regret of his brother’s that they never made peace.
