Finola Hughes is a legend in daytime television and a Daytime Emmy winner in 1991. So it’s no surprise that once again she’s been nominated for another Daytime Emmy Award – for the eighth time! Find out how she feels about that and more in this exclusive Soap Hub interview.
Finola Hughes Talks Daytime Emmy Nomination
Congratulations on your Daytime Emmy nomination – did you expect the nomination at all?
I did not expect a nomination, and it took me completely by surprise. So much has been going on in the world. [General Hospital executive producer] Frank [Valentini] called me because he knew I would not be online and would not have seen the announcement!
How many more Daytime Emmys do you think you have in your future?
Well, I’ve got a looooong way to go to catch up with Tony Geary [ex-Luke] or Susan Flannery [ex-Stephanie, The Bold and the Beautiful]! I’m very content, but I will keep striving to be better!
Have you written your speech yet?
I sent in a dance as an acceptance speech. It was Maura West’s [Ava] idea. I loved it and went to the beach and danced! My daughter shot it on her iPhone.
Have you heard from any of the other Daytime Emmy nominees in your category?
Yes, I heard from all the girls I know in the category. Maura, Heather [Tom; Katie on The Bold and the Beautiful] and Kelly [Katherine Kelly Lang, Brooke on BB]. I don’t know Ari [Zucker; Nicole on Days of our Lives] very well, I, of course, know her work, but I haven’t spent as much time with her as the other ladies.
Have your General Hospital co-stars checked in with you?
Everyone just about checked in with me. Ian Buchanan [ex-Duke], James Patrick [Stuart, Valentin], Michelle Stafford [ex-Nina], Maura West, Michael Easton [Finn], Brooklyn Silzer [Emma], little Jophielle Love [Violet], Maurice Benard [Sonny], Laura Wright [Carly], Stevie Burton [Jason], and Bradford Anderson [Spinelli], and Nancy Lee Grahn [Alexis]. I’m still waiting to hear from Kin Shriner [Scott]! I think it was an oversight…….
Your children must have been so proud of you?
My kids don’t really know I’m nominated!!!
Of course, you’ve heard from the other half of the legendary TV duo of Duke and Anna?
Yes, Ian and I talk most days.
You’re having a great time during this stay at home edict – who knew you’d have so many more months to have everyone under one roof?
Honestly, I have had a fab time with my kids. It has been quite revelatory. My oldest was home from college. And my two youngest, we’ve spent most of the time online school, fundraising, watching movies, baking, gardening, reading, and the beach when it’s open. It’s been good. I will always remember this time with my children.
What’s the first thing you’ll do when you get to walk back into the General Hospital studios?
The first thing I will do when I go back to GH is get a haircut! I think I will get my daughter to do some baking and take in some of her cookies and brownies. We all need that about now.
What is the one favorite vacation spot you can’t wait to visit?
I want to go to Maine or Martha’s Vineyard.
