Soap opera fans have been enjoying the sound of Ian Buchanan’s Scottish brogue since 1986 when he first landed the role of Duke Lavery on General Hospital.

Ian Buchanan: The American Dream

The actor was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1957 and arrived in the United States as a young adult determined to make it as an actor. He soon began studying at the famed Lee Strasberg Theater Institute in New York and eventually made his way out to Los Angeles. He has since thrilled soap fans on GH, The Bold and the Beautiful, Port Charles, All My Children, and Days of Our Lives.

However, now we know what encouraged his trek across the Atlantic thanks to a recent tweet in which he tells the story of an aunt who emigrated here before him.

“My dream of America goes back to my aunt who came here and sent me five dollars, back to Scotland, every year on my birthday and made me promise to come to the States and bring the money. I did, alone. My life is here. It has nothing to do with jobless gun-wielding thugs.”

Buchanan considers himself a true American who made his dreams come true and is now enjoying the beauty of this country and what surrounds him during this difficult time, tweeting lovely nature photos and encouraging us to wear masks to protect ourselves and others as the coronavirus pandemic affects the globe.

All of his outdoor pics, filled with bursting color of flora and fauna, come with the caption, “Out and about” with the hashtag “#maskup” — even one of himself sporting a mask and a t-shirt showing off the American flag.
