General Hospital Should Have Characters Make Drama, Not Nice

Soap operas are also called daytime dramas but it appears that General Hospital has decided that drama is overrated and instead seems to be neutering past rivalries and that just doesn’t make a ton of sense to us.

General Hospital Needs Conflict

Tuesday’s episode was a case in point as Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) finally let loose his anger and betrayal over Michael Corinthos Quartermaine (Chad Duell) sleeping with his then-wife, Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) when he was near death and suffering from paralysis. It had fans cheering all over the Internet to see hypocrite Michael finally dragged for his own egregious behavior.

But then the commercial came. When the show returned, Chase was already letting Michael off the hook — hey bygones, man, let’s be friends again. Say what?! We’re not asking for Michael and Chase’s bromance to be over for good but could the break at least last a whole episode? No, seriously, we really mean months but hey — apparently that’s asking way too much when it couldn’t even last two minutes.

Then General Hospital had Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) helping heal poor pitifully sad Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) — the same Carly who made her life with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) a living hell for years cause God forbid Jason finds happiness with any woman other than Carly. Olivia Falconeri Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero) as Carly’s friend helping was enough — was Sam really needed to prop her up too? These two should not be friends.

Speaking of two who should never be friends — Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West) and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros). It wasn’t that long ago that Nina was cutting Ava open and stealing Avery from her womb. FRIENDS?!!? This is just nuts. How is Ava getting past that? Ditto, how is Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) playing nice with Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) who did horrible things to her daughter/family?! Sure, Liesl has been given a mental makeover but still…some things are a bridge too far.

We get that people grow. We get that people change. But conflict is a foundation for drama, and history should not be cast aside because a character needs someone to talk to so they aren’t simply talking a fern. But there have to be other options for that, as opposed to smoothing out rivalries that could spin stories for years.
