No soap opera slander here. Karla Mosley is excited to be part of the cast of CBS’ new soap, Beyond The Gates. She’s not here for the critics who oppose her decision to join another soap.

Soaps Are Eternal

Soap operas originated on radio in the 1930s before moving to television. The genre has taken on different forms over the decades. The premise of soap operas was to tell a story. There’s no denying that soaps have led to the creation of other genres, such as reality television and primetime dramas.

Karla Mosley has been in her share of soap operas. She’s appeared on The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Castle, Hart of Dixie, and Gossip Girl. She’s thrilled to be part of CBS’ first-ever, one-hour, Black-led soap opera. In an interview with Blavity, she addressed the criticism about the soap opera genre.

“So many people ask us, ‘How does it feel to be on a dying genre?’ And I’m like, ‘Y’all, what other genre has been around since, like, for hundreds of years?’ I was also on the last year of Guiding Light, and that show, including radio, had been on 72 years,” Mosley exclaimed. “And now we’re about 20 years past that. So it’s like an energy that I think everyone in daytime is so excited about.”

There’s something exciting about doing something new on daytime television. But it also brings back that nostalgia of watching your favorite stories with your family members. The cast of BTG hopes to do that with their groundbreaking new soap. Mosley already made waves on B&B when she played Maya Avant, who became the first transgender main character in a daytime soap.

Teases BTG Role

Elsewhere in the interview, Mosley teased what soap fans can expect from her new character, Dani Dupree. She’s the daughter of Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis). Dani doesn’t hold back any punches. Mosley called her a “tornado” and a “force.” She’s not a perfect character, nor should she be.

“But the other thing is, there’ll be moments when she pisses you off because she’s not all sugar and spice,” Mosley explained. “She’s not all sugar, I’d say. She’s a lot of spice. But you are always rooting for her.” Viewers will relate to Dani’s storyline. She’s the type of strong woman we all wish we could be.

Beyond The Gates premieres on CBS on Monday, February 24, at 2 p.m. ET. New episodes stream the following day on Paramount Plus.
