Nothing stirs things up in Genoa City like a bad girl making sure she gets her way. While The Young and the Restless has tried really hard to make Abby Newman-Abbott Chancellor into a heroine, it’s never really clicked. But now that she’s being more thoughtless, cruel, and selfish, the character totally works!
Soap Hub editors have found themselves throwing things at the television lately as we watch Abby (Melissa Ordway) shoot daggers at poor Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes), a recent victim of a stalker kidnapping (by Abby’s ex, no less, looking to get back with her by playing the hero), who was trapped for weeks, wondering if she’d have to give birth alone (and without drugs!) in that tiny room.
So you’d think Abby would be a tiny bit grateful that her surrogate managed to protect her little one, right? Well, you would be wrong. Abby doesn’t trust Mariah. She fears that her baby’s surrogate will run off again (um, she didn’t ‘run off’ last time — Stitch snatched her!) with her precious baby boy. And don’t get us started on how poor Mariah should feel honored by being the third letter in his name. As the woman who carried little Dominic, she deserves at least a whole middle name beginning with “M.” Mariah carried Dominic. She’s not a word search puzzle clue.
It looks like things are only going to get worse with the Young and the Restless surrogacy-gone-off-the-rails story as both the sperm donor Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) and Mariah (the incubator uterus) become more and more drawn to their it-takes-a-village baby boy. And if one decides they want to have more of a say in the baby’s life, Abby would have to draw a firm line in the sand, taking her to places that would be fun to play for the actress and show a new side to Abby in the process.
And that’s what we can’t wait to see! Abby was handed much in life as a little girl. As she got older, she acted out a bit — remember the “Naked Heiress” phase she went through? She’s been torn between being both an Abbott and a Newman throughout her life. Now, she may have to deal with the reality that her husband may not be coming home. If her pals turn on her regarding the baby, she could seriously act out.
And Abby acting out could be fun TV, the dramatic stuff soap opera viewers yearn for but don’t seem to get a lot of in Genoa City. Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) can’t be the only young woman in town mixing things up. Let’s see Abby start going for what she wants at all costs.
