The Young and the Restless Leans Into Telling Story…Not Showing It

The Young and the Restless has been playing a variation on the same scene over and over again: Lily Winters and Billy Abbott discuss how much they love each other, how hot the sex is that they are constantly having off-camera…and then they go their separate ways like polite co-workers.

Now, we’re all for couples having individual interests and lives that don’t revolve exclusively around romance. Yay, independent grown-ups! But, shouldn’t there be something beyond talk to prove that this is a pairing worth rooting for?

And then there are Faith Newman (Reylynn Caster) and Moses Winters (Jacob Aaron Gaines). Both spent Valentine’s Day stressing about coming up with the perfect gift to demonstrate for the other how they felt.

But we have no idea how they feel. Are they in love? In like? Good friends? All they do is tell other people how much the other means to them. Could we, maybe, you know, see it once in a while? That might help us figure out what exactly is going on.

The Young and the Restless: Fast Track

At least with Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) and Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope), we got the slow burn, the pining, the stolen glances, the kissing suddenly cut off…and then they finally had sex, right there in the office. At least, we think they did. There was kissing, then a cut and…yeah, we were assured that a good time was had by all.

Again, telling, not showing. We’re not asking for soft-core porn here, or even a flashback to The Red Show Diaries (look it up, it was a thing in the 1990s). But Adam and Sally talking rather than doing was just a symptom of a much larger problem, where the show doesn’t seem to realize that only seeing is believing.
