Stop us if you’ve heard these Y&R spoilers for a storyline before: A character arrives in Genoa City. He/She is instantly branded the worst person who ever lived. Not only their past victims, but people who have absolutely nothing to do with them are talking about how awful they were and how their crimes can never be forgiven — even if their crimes are identical to ones committed by other now forgiven citizens.
Y&R Spoilers: Kick ‘Em While They’re Done
The pile-on gets so ridiculous, especially when it comes from those with a lot more privilege and opportunities than the alleged villains, that you can’t help it — you start feeling sorry for them. Human brains are wired to root for the underdog, and there is just so much you can take before you begin to feel for the ones constantly being harangued.
Young & Restless Spoilers: Look Closer
Are we talking about Adam Newman (Mark Grossman)? Sure, Chloe Mitchell Fisher (Elizabeth Hendrickson) has every right to hate him forever. But Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) and Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow) were being awfully self-righteous for an awfully long time.
Or are we talking about Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope)? Not only was she berated for what she did back on The Bold and the Beautiful, but Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) practically had an aneurysm, ranting about how horrible it was to get Summer Newman (Allison Lanier) a job. When Summer and Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) returned to town, they made a point of stressing how they still hated Sally — despite her actions basically setting them up for the sweet life they have now.
And yet, Adam and Sally are now one of the most popular couples on Y&R. Sure, the actors’ chemistry played a major part. But so does our sympathy for how both have been treated.
Y&R Spoilers: New Kids In Town
Now Ashland Locke (Robert Newman) and Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) are getting the pariah treatment. No one is worse than them, and even people who’ve never met either feel a need to contribute their two cents. You’d think their time in Genoa City is limited.
But, uh-uh! Remember what we said above? We’ve broken the code. We see you Y&R! We know what you’re doing! This is your way of making us feel for Ashland and Diane, even root for them. And, who knows, it could be another super-couple in the making. You can’t fool us!
