Maya Rudolph may be TV’s go-to person for impersonating United States Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live, but The Young and the Restless star Brytni Sarpy wants to play the U.S. Senator, too.
Sarpy, who plays Dr. Elena Dawson on YR, recently posted her enthusiasm over the news that Harris had joined Vice President Joe Biden as his running mate in the presidential election.
“I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing @kamalaharris speak a couple of years ago and immediately fell in love with her strength, tenacity, presence, and intelligence,” Sarpy shared on Instagram. “She is fierce. She is a leader. She is the embodiment of what this country needs. 🖤 So happy. ✨💫 (Also, I want to play her in her bio, so… dibs!)”
Actors with ties to daytime have taken on playing political figures. Alec Baldwin (ex-Billy, The Doctors; ex-Joshua, Knots Landing) has portrayed President Donald Trump on SNL for the past four years. The late Susan Brown (ex-Gail, General Hospital) not only played First Lady Pat Nixon in The Final Days, but she also portrayed First Lady Nancy Reagan in Without Warning: The James Brady Story.
Bryan Cranston (ex-Doug, Loving) brought to life President Lyndon Johnson in the film All the Way. Steven Webber (ex-Kevin, As the World Turns) and Scott Bailey (ex-Sandy, Guiding Light) each portrayed President John F. Kennedy at different times in his life. The former portrayed him in The Kennedys of Massachusetts and the latter played a young JFK in an episode of Timeless.
William Devane (ex-Greg, KNOTS) also played JFK in the TV movie The Missiles of October, a dramatization of the Cuban Missile Crisis. So, needless to say, there’s quite a precedent for actors who have soaps on their resumes taking on portrayals of real-life figures from the world of politics! The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
