Over the years, soap operas and the actors who star on them have graced the covers of such magazines as Time, Newsweek, and People. Now, all four soaps — The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital, and The Young and the Restless — are each appearing on variant covers of the new TV Guide magazine.
The Soap Opera Comeback
The last time that a soap opera appeared on the cover of TV Guide was almost 20 years ago when the magazine featured NBC’s Passions. Why give BB, DAYS, GH and YR the red carpet treatment now?
“The cover[s] came about as we saw how The Bold and the Beautiful production was first able to get up and running with all the safety measures and were then followed by General Hospital and The Young and the Restless…and Days of our Lives will join them by going back reportedly on September 1,” Jim Halterman, West Coast Bureau Chief, TV Guide Magazine, tells Soap Hub.
“We were so impressed with what they were all accomplishing that it was a no-brainer to really go big and make this a cover story,” Halterman continues. “As I began talking with producers/writers and cast members from each of the four shows, the editorial team thought giving the issue four different covers would not only honor each show but also would really champion them getting back to work first and showing other shows – including primetime TV – how they can safely do it.
“We’re hoping giving these iconic daytime dramas some much-deserved attention will bring back some of the prominence to television audiences and the industry that the genre once had and can have again,” Halterman adds.
Soap fans can choose among covers featuring BB’s Denise Richards (Shauna), Thorsten Kaye (Ridge), and Kathrine Kelly Lang (Brooke); DAYS’ Deidre Hall (Marlena) and Drake Hogestyn (John); GH’s Laura Wright (Carly) and Maurice Benard (Sonny); and YR’s Eric Braeden (Victor) and Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) — or collect all four! The TV Guide soap opera-themed issue is on sale Thursday, August 13.
