Nick is intensely focused on taking down Matt Clark on The Young and the Restless. At the end of Monday’s episode, Nick found a bag with a Fentanyl pill in his pocket and stared at it for a long time. He craved the high that would put him into overdrive and enable him to deal with his archnemesis. Yet, this obsession could spark a downward spiral and lead to a relapse or escalation of his addiction issues.

Key Takeaways

  • Nick’s struggle with sobriety will intensify this week, and he could hit rock bottom.
  • Nick could make a dangerous deal amid the ongoing hunt for Matt.
  • Nick’s obsession has caused him to act erratically, leaving him vulnerable to Matt’s influence.

What Really Sparked Nick’s Addiction?

Nick (Joshua Morrow) is struggling with the hero archetype. In his mind, he feels he has to be the one to take down Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) and end his family’s pain. Seeing his enemy back in Genoa City has triggered his addiction, although he refuses to admit it.

Initially, Nick took the prescribed medication after he broke his leg in that disastrous car accident with Matt. But he became hooked on the pills in an effort to feel some control over his life. Things escalated after his prescription ran out, and he turned to Matt’s Fentanyl to fuel his addiction.

Matt has quietly manipulated Nick behind the scenes. Back in Los Angeles, he was a drug lord when he ran The Shadow Room. So, he knows how to suck someone into that life. He’s done it with Nick. And while Nick thinks he’s in control, Matt is the one who’s been pulling the strings all this time.

Matt’s Reappearance Could Trigger Nick’s Relapse

The Newmans assumed that Matt was dead in Las Vegas. However, it turned out that Matt suffers from amnesia and doesn’t remember his past crimes. Matt’s memory loss could make him more dangerous than ever.

Now that a memory-plagued Matt has resurfaced in Genoa City, Nick is on the brink of veering out of control. He tried to cover it up for his brother, who understandably has his concerns. Adam has already noticed that Nick is acting a bit off-kilter. Much like he did in Vegas. And it could lead to accusations that he’s been using again.

Nick has been open with his immediate family about his addiction. He’s part of an outpatient recovery program where he should be dealing with the issues that sparked his addiction, but he continues to put his main focus on finding Matt and taking care of him for good. Nick’s obsession with taking down Matt will likely make it harder for him to stay sober.

This version of Nick is different. He’s become an erratic, angry, and impulsive man who wants to do things his own way. He’s putting a lot of pressure on himself to clean up his family’s messes, and that mess is Matt Clark. Nick’s need to control the situation will clash with his ability to control his dependency, leading to a dangerous outcome.
