In the May 14 episode of The Young and the Restless, Victor realized Nick was no longer simply angry about Matt Clark. He was beginning to think exactly as Victor himself did. Nick openly defended his plan to kill Matt as the only way to protect the Newman family, and for the first time, Victor looked shaken by what his son was becoming.

Key Takeaways

  • Nick insists that killing Matt is the only solution.
  • Victor realizes Nick is spiraling emotionally.
  • Nick is starting to sound more like Victor than himself.

Victor Hears His Own Thinking Coming Out of Nick’s Mouth

Nick (Joshua Morrow) walked into the ranch convinced he had already figured everything out. In his mind, killing Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) was not revenge. It was protection. He calmly explained to Victor (Eric Braeden) that he intended to provoke Matt into attacking him in front of Detective Burrow (Matt Cohen) so there would be a witness to support a self-defense claim.

Nick no longer appeared conflicted about crossing a line. He genuinely believed there was no other way to keep his family safe.

Victor immediately recognized how dangerous that mindset had become because it mirrored his own thinking almost exactly. Protect the family first. Worry about morality later. Eliminate the threat before it destroys everything around you.

Nick even threw that reality directly back at Victor when he pointed out that Victor raised him to think this way. That moment completely shifted the emotional dynamic between them. Victor could no longer separate Nick’s behavior from the environment he created inside the Newman family.

Nick Stops Sounding Like the Moral Newman

For years, Nick positioned himself as the Newman sibling most willing to push back against Victor’s tactics. Even when he made mistakes, he usually tried to convince himself that there were lines he would not cross. Those lines barely seemed to exist anymore.

Nick dismissed concerns about prison, consequences, and even his addiction because all of his focus had narrowed onto Matt. Every conversation became about permanently removing the threat. The obsession was starting to consume everything else around him.

Victor’s reaction made that shift even more powerful because Victor usually respects ruthless decisions when they benefit the family. This time, however, he looked genuinely disturbed by what he was hearing.

Victor Finally Looks Afraid of What Comes Next

Once Victor confronted Nick about still using drugs, the conversation became much more emotional. Nick insisted he had everything under control, but nothing about him actually looked controlled. He looked exhausted, overwhelmed, and increasingly disconnected from reality.

Victor tried redirecting him toward responsibility by reminding him that the family would someday look to him for leadership. Ironically, that only reinforced the larger problem underneath everything. Nick already believes he is leading the family the way Victor taught him to.

That realization clearly rattled Victor. For perhaps the first time, Victor seemed to understand that Matt Clark may no longer be the only danger threatening the Newman family.
