The Young and the Restless head writer Josh Griffith stepped down as co-executive producer of the top-rated CBS daytime drama, Soap Central reported. His co-executive producer, Sally McDonald, will become the sole executive producer. Griffith will continue in his role as head writer of the soap.
Changes in Genoa City
McDonald joined Griffith as co-executive producer last year, and now she’ll be the sole executive producer. Griffith made the change to focus solely on the writing for the soap opera.
During her time at Y&R, McDonald earned eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing Team. As for Griffith, he’s been writing for the genre since 1988, and he’s been a scribe for One Life to Live, As The World Turns, General Hospital, Sunset Beach, and Days of our Lives in addition to Y&R. For his work, Griffith has seven Daytime Emmy Awards.
What This Means for Y&R
News of the big change comes as the soap has several large storylines going on. There’s Malcolm (Shemar Moore) needing a bone marrow transplant, and Cane (Billy Flynn) is a match.
Of course, Cane is caught up in Victor’s (Eric Braeden) war against every business in GC. That threatens his ability to help Malcolm while Victor works for revenge against Cane, Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), and Jack (Peter Bergman). Even Patty (Stacy Haiduk) is back in town, stirring up trouble, and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) has once again had enough of her husband’s machinations.
Plus, there’s Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) terrorizing Nick (Joshua Morrow), Sharon (Sharon Case), and Noah (Lucas Adams). All the while, Nick is dealing with a pill addiction.
With this move, Griffith will be able to focus solely on his head writer duties amid all these major storylines. Soap Hub wishes him the best in his new situation, and we can’t wait to see what’s to come for the soap.
