On The Young and the Restless, Ashland Locke followed in his mother-in-law’s, Nikki Newman’s, footsteps, and faked a terminal illness in order to achieve his objective. (He was so committed to the bit that he even playacted symptoms while no one was watching! Method actor!) So if the man faked dying, why would anyone expect him to be sincere about death?
Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow) punched his former brother-in-law in defense of his sister’s honor. Ashland (Robert Newman) fell backward and hit his head. Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) rushed to feel his pulse. She couldn’t find one. “Oh, well,” she shrugged, “He’s dead.” Or something like that.
Nick felt terrible about taking a life. But did he call 911? Did he call a medical professional of any sort, even the now non-practicing kind like Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic)? Nah. They decided to call their brother-in-law Chance Chancellor (Conner Floyd). Who’s a cop. OK, we believe between his police and military background, Chance has some basic First Aid, maybe even rudimentary triage and paramedic skills. But, as the production company card says, “Not a doctor!”
So not only did two non-medical professionals like Nick and Victoria decide that a man was dead from one punch — hey, remember when Victoria thought the same about JT Hellstrom (Thad Luckinbill) a little while ago on Young and the Restless? — they then returned to find the French door flapping and Ashland missing. Do they still assume he’s dead? Do they think he’s Jesus?
If he’s not dead, then Nick can stop having sads, it was just a fist-fight gone bad, and Ashland is unlikely to press charges under the circumstances.
If, however, Nick and Victoria are still convinced he’s dead and somehow got swept up in a typhoon, then all we can ask is: How many people do you personally know who have returned from the great beyond? So why would you, even for a minute, default to that?
