The Young and the Restless viewers know that Victor Newman is all about power, money, and family. Right now, he’s focused on his family, and his sons Nick and Adam have earned his ire over their love triangle with Sally Spectra. For his performance, Soap Hub Performer of the Week honors for Y&R is presented to Victor’s portrayer, Eric Braeden.
This week, Victor (Eric Braeden) found out that Sally (Courtney Hope) is pregnant with Adam’s (Mark Grossman) baby. He was furious that Adam still pined after Sally while she dated Nick (Joshua Morrow). In the scene at Crimson Lights, Victor forcefully let Adam have it. Braeden fully embodied all the wrath that Victor delivered toward his younger son. Adam, and the audience, knew precisely what Victor thought of Adam’s entanglement with Sally.
Later, Victor took Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) to task for keeping Sally’s pregnancy from him. His behavior with his wife remained gentle and loving while he softly admonished her. Braeden’s softened body language and loving, if bemused, expressions conveyed his irritation at Nikki while he also continued loving her.
However, when Nick walked in, Victor’s entire demeanor changed. Gone was the gentleness he’d displayed to Nikki. Instead, Braeden made Victor’s voice harden, and the volume of his delivery amplified. Despite all of Nick’s explanations, Victor remained firmly against the situation, and he angrily accused Nick of trying to hurt Adam. Braeden accomplished this fiery scene while pointing at Nick and using his hands to express his displeasure.
In all, Victor expressed his fury at both sons. While he said similar words, Braeden showed subtle differences in how his on-screen alter ego approached Adam and Nick. With Adam, there was at least a bit of that gentleness that came out with Nikki because he’s still trying to win over his youngest son. With Nick, Braeden showed none of Victor’s softer side. Bravo, Eric Braeden, on an excellent performance.
