Chance Chancellor just caught his wife Abby Newman Abbott Chancellor post-lovemaking with the biological father of their baby, Devon Hamilton. While it’s perfectly reasonable to end a marriage over such betrayal, Chance’s reaction doesn’t add up. Here’s what we think is going on.
Chance Chancellor is Depressed
Chance (Conner Floyd) is telling Abby (Melissa Ordway) things that he can’t quite believe. Is it just us or does he seems more relieved than angry that things with his marriage have gone south? At long last, he doesn’t have to pretend around her anymore, but why was he pretending in the first place? We’ll tell you why — his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
We know Chance got some therapy, but he still doesn’t seem quite back to normal. Instead of working to achieve a good work/life balance, he threw himself into work, doggedly ensuring he closed each of Rey Rosales’s (Jordi Vilasuso) cases. Sure, he did somewhat better with Abby and their son Dominic, but he still wasn’t overly thrilled to head home and experience Halloween with them. That’s not typical behavior.
He’s handled his discussions with Abby and Devon (Bryton James) with a reasonable, calm, level head. However, shouldn’t he actually be furious? Wouldn’t some anger and at least a little shouting be a more typical response to catching your wife and her close friend laying in each other’s arms on the couch?
It truly seems like Chance is detached from his family and friends, avoiding situations, and feeling emotionally numb. All of those are potential symptoms of PTSD. While we don’t blame him at all for breaking up with Abby, we do worry that perhaps he still has unresolved PTSD issues. Hopefully, he is able to get some help if that is the case before things get worse.
Who knows? Perhaps he’ll end up finding a friend in Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan), depending on how things go. What do you think? Is Chance’s reaction off? Do you think he might be depressed? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
