The Young and the Restless fans spent weeks trying to figure out what Nate Hastings was thinking when he decided to betray his family and slip corporate secrets to Victoria Newman about the planned Chancellor-Winters IPO.

The Young and the Restless: Nate Hastings Comes Clean

We understood why Nate ultimately came clean to Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) and Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) – it was a Hail Mary to save his relationship with Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy). What we didn’t understand was why he’d done it in the first place. Finally, on Thursday, October 20 the two men laid their cards on the table… and the scenes proved a full house.

Y&R: If I Did It, Here’s Why

Nate (Sean Christian) finally admitted what we’d suspected but it was never made clear: He was furious at Devon for destroying his surgical career when his punch sent Nate careening through a glass table and shredded the muscles in his operating hand. Now, when Nate felt Devon was undermining him again at Chancellor-Winters, he struck out more aggressively than the situation called for.

The Young and the Restless: Devon Hamilton, Chain of Command

Devon struck back by pointing out what the audience was thinking – Nate had no professional business experience, and so deserved to be overruled by Devon, who was not only more experienced but also his boss. Oh, and that time Devon punched Nate, it was because the latter had slept with his girlfriend, so, you know, not exactly blameless.

Daddy Issues

Nate got in one final blow when he accused Devon of thinking no one could ever live up to Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John). But whether it was a low blow or an astute psychological observation, is beside the point.

The entire scene was well-written, strongly acted (and smoothly directed; they made circling a single coffee-table compelling), and a long time coming.

Both characters were given their say… and their due. More, please. This family feud is just getting started!
