When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: A Critic’s Week In Review

Boy did this week’s Young and the Restless offerings leave me with a plethora of questions. For starters, why is Chance Chancellor (Conner Floyd) the one moving out of his family home? It’s not Chance’s fault that Abby Newman Abbott Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) sold Brad Carlton’s mansion, and he’s not stopping her from running back home to either the Abbott or the Newman side of her family, nor has he told her she can’t pack up her things and move into a suite at The Grand Phoenix or the Athletic Club. A CHANCELLOR should be the one living in the CHANCELLOR mansion. Then again, Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) lived at the Newman Ranch during their marriage while Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) relegated himself to a penthouse apartment in Newman Tower, so what do I know?

Well, I actually do know that if you want to actively avoid someone you should refrain from patronizing the establishment they own and operate — why on earth would Chance spend even a moment a Society?

Here be further questions: Why, after all this time, would Nikki and Victor suddenly offer Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) and Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) the tac house? Did one or both of the girls, or perhaps Sharon Rosales (Sharon Case) share the news that the two plan to adopt, and in her benevolence, Nikki gifted them a property that was going spare? Also, does this mean The Young and the Restless will actually show the much-beloved set, or is this the soap’s way of clueing us into the fact that Mariah and Tessa are not long for the front or back burner?

And speaking of sets, why not make it crystal clear from the jump that the Chancellor mansion set had not been downsized and wholly redesigned? It’s pretty bad when an actor has to serve as her show’s mouthpiece.

I’d also like to know who Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) thinks he really is, because surely at this point he can’t see himself as the good guy. There are only so many times you can be a party to adultery before the sheen wears off and the lack of self-awareness begins to grate.

I’m equally curious to know for how much longer Sharon will live her life by the creed “What Would Rey Rosales Do?” and why Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) found it so odd, so surprising that Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) wanted to pile her mental health struggles onto Connor (Judah Mckay). Up to this point, Chelsea hasn’t really cared what’s best for her son and, loath as I am to agree with the youngster whom I usually find to be the epitome of a spoiled brat, he more than hit the nail on the head when he previously accused Chelsea of making everything about herself.

Her excuse of having to tell Connor what transpired on the roof of The Grand Phoenix because he’d probably, eventually, find out didn’t hold much water considering the incident isn’t public knowledge and it isn’t as though the people in the know would blab to the boy. Connor already (wrongly) intuited that he’d made Chelsea stop loving him because he’d reacted badly to her being Johnny’s mother, what’s the boy to think now?

And will someone please explain to me how Nikki, Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson), and Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) can think siccing a career criminal with an axe to grind on Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) is the best of moves? I mean, if the point is to make themselves look petty as Hell, as vindictive as Diane accuses them of being, then mission accomplished, but how can they think that anyone will thank them for doing it?

Further Y&R Musings

I’m curious to know where my fellow Young and the Restless viewers fall in their opinion on Chance vs. Abby. The way I see it, Abby most certainly did wrong, but what right has Chance actually done? He abandoned her soon after their honeymoon, allowed her to believe him dead, barely made an effort to connect with Dominic when he returned, and he insisted on immediately returning to the police force before even trying to repair his marriage. I can’t say that I really feel much of anything for Chance. As far as daytime TV hubbys go, he wasn’t the worst, but he sure wasn’t a good one.

I’m likewise over Devon and his insistence that he really tried to make a go of it with Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan). I can’t think of a single time he actually showed up and supported her through any of her travails. She saw her grandfather tried and convicted for the murder of her father without Devon by her side. She’s been watching her mother hover between life and death for months now and he visited her…once? And then only for a day or two. What a man…NOT!
