Soap Hub Performer Of The Week For DAYS: Mary Beth Evans

Given that her DAYS alter-ego is usually being menaced by a big bad or suffering from some medical malady, you might be hard-pressed to realize just how funny Mary Beth Evans — and by extension, Kayla Brady Johnson — can really be. Thank goodness recent scenes have given the actress the chance to show off by showing out. Evans has certainly earned herself this special recognition.

Mary Beth Evans – Performer Of The Week

The minute a gum-smacking, bewigged, bejeweled, furred-up Evans sashayed into that mock dive-bar — and closed the establishment’s door with her derriere — it was goodbye Dr. Kayla Brady Johnson and hello…Ava Vitali?!

Though the secret-keeping bartender wasn’t much impressed, we certainly were, what with Evans slinking across the set and readjusting her coat so that her *ahem* “girls” were on full display. And that accent. That accent…what was that accent? Entertaining, that’s what it was.

Once introductions were made — “You ever heard of the Vitalis? The Vitalis run Philly, and I run the Vitali’s.” — cards were laid on the table: “Ava’s” son was MIA, and she wanted answers. More succinctly, “I want him back safe and sound, or somebody’s heading for a slumber party with the fish down in Lake Washington!”

While Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols) tried to reason with the gin slinger, Kayla busied herself by picking up and playing with a nearby pool ball — perhaps Evans was trying to make a pointed reference to something? — and when things went sideways real quick — resulting in Steve having to get handsy — Kayla’s character oh so helpfully — and a bit humorously — warned the victim that he’d better cough up her son’s location, or her friend would, “make him cry for his mommy!”

Honorable Mention: Lucas Adams

Mary Beth Evans and Stephen Nichols’ screen partner didn’t have much to do, but he more than deserves this special shoutout for the deadpan way in which he questioned what Kayla and Steve were wearing.
