A Critic’s Review Of The Young and the Restless: Allergy To Drama

When it comes to The Young and the Restless, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of Y&R’s week that was.

The Young and the Restless: A Critic’s Week In Review

I have to say, I was very impressed that The Young and the Restless managed to subvert the expectations I had going into this week.

When last we left Genoa City, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) had bid Ashland Locke (Robert Newman) enter her abode, despite knowing better, and he’d begun ranting and raving about how there was only one way their story could end, and I just knew that we were in for a repeat of the JT Helstrom (Thad Luckinbill) buried in a park storyline.

But nope. Though the stories are a bit similar, they are, in fact, different. For this, I am truly grateful. I don’t think I could have handled watching Victoria and Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow) digging Ashland a shallow grave, throwing him inside it, and making an I Know What You Did Last Summer-style promise never to broach the subject again.

As it stands, I’m interested in how exactly Nicholas moves forward seeing as how he knows, deep down inside, that he did in fact kill Ashland and that Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) staged that car accident.

It could make for juicy character exploration…or it could be deftly swept under a rug. This is The Young and the Restless after all; the soap that seems to have an allergy to any real dramatic happenings.

Further Y&R Musings

* After watching Jack Abbott’s (Peter Bergman) most recent interactions with Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters), I’m cautiously optimistic that he isn’t as dumb as Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson) and I have been crediting him.

* How invested should I be in Tessa Porter’s (Cait Fairbanks) plight considering how little investment The Young and the Restless seems to be putting into the storyline?

* I apparently have yet to fully fathom Adam Newman’s (Mark Grossman) plan, because if the whole point of this is secure Sally Spectra’s (Courtney Hope) employment at Newman Media, why didn’t he just break down and admit that after she made clear her intention to resign her position in protest?

* If the Abbott family, Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) and Summer Newman Abbott (Allison Lanier) in particular, are so concerned about how Harrison (Kellen Enriquez) will be affected by Ashland’s loss, then perhaps they shouldn’t have engineered that estrangement between the boy and his “father.”

The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes. For more about what’s coming up in Genoa City, check out all the latest that’s been posted on Y&R spoilers, and for an in-depth look at the show’s history, click here.
