Sean Kanan’s played many roles on daytime dramas but Deacon Sharpe is arguably his most powerful and complex persona. For his portrayal of a man who came from a broken home to one who is desperately searching to redeem himself and lay down some roots, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors on Sean Kanan (Deacon).
Sean Kanan – Performer of the Week
Since he’s been released from prison, Deacon has attempted to show Hope’s (Annika Noelle) family that he’s a changed man. While he’s made inroads with Hope and, to an extent, Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), he hasn’t convinced many others — but he has shown viewers and us that he’s no longer the man who put a telephone receiver in a glass of water to drown out the cries of anguish Bridget’s family made as he deflowered her.
Fortunately, while Deacon has grown, he hasn’t lost his humor, his edge, or his appeal. He can crack wise with fellow outcast Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) while also knowing that she’s not to be trusted. He’ll play along with her and even hang out with Sheila in her hotel suite as it certainly beats his last accommodations (a prison cell).
However, Deacon knows that ultimately associating with Sheila is not going to show Hope he’s changed or impress her family. He’s not unaffected by her flirting with him, but Deacon (Sean Kanan) knows he shouldn’t be tempted by her. Thus, Deacon has taken up residence in a dank workroom at Il Giardino where he does honest work mopping floors.
Deacon’s gently and consistently supported Hope as she’s gone up against her family over wanting a bond with her dad. And, he’s subtly pointed out to Brooke how passionate their past was, reminding her at times that Hope is not just her daughter but theirs.
While Ridge and others may choose not to believe it, Deacon has changed. What will make his story even more compelling is if he takes a step back (either by his own design or someone else’s) and then, Deacon will have to fight twice as hard to prove he cares about Hope. We’re confident that in Sean Kanan’s capable hands, Deacon will continue to be a complex and compelling character.
