Soaps aren’t just about big splashy galas and dramatic showdowns. Sometimes, as Sean Kanan and his character Deacon Sharpe on The Bold and the Beautiful recently reminded us, they’re about quiet moments with two people laying out their hearts, and talking to one another.
We watched Deacon’s heart nearly break as he quietly listened to his daughter Hope (Annika Noelle), who praised her dad for bringing down Sheila (Kimberlin Brown — when is this actress’s work going to win her an overdue Daytime Emmy?). Having his child say these words might have meant more to Deacon under different circumstances. However, what Hope doesn’t know is that while Deacon helped bring Sheila to justice, he also gave her refuge for months. Plus, you know, they had sex.
Deacon dismissed Hope’s support with few words but the look Kanan brought to his character’s face said it all — he’s not worthy. Later, Deacon flashbacked to more intimate moments he spent with Sheila along with her realization that she’d been busted.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” a truly remorseful Deacon told Sheila in the visiting area at the jail, her new home. The restauranteur genuinely asked how Sheila was doing following her heart attack. In an effort to get her to understand why he betrayed her, Deacon explained that he was threatened with prison if he didn’t help bring Sheila down. “I didn’t want this,” he whispered to her so that no one would overhear him. Deacon managed to get a smile out of Sheila as he recounted happier times that they shared. “Please tell me that you don’t hate me,” Deacon asked of his former lover.
Oh, sure, Deacon knows that Sheila could give him up and let everyone know that he’d been her accomplice after the fact but we get the feeling that’s not why he went to see her. Kanan brought compassionate levels to his daytime alter-ego. Arguably, Sheila hasn’t learned from her mistakes over the decades. (She’s often her own worst enemy.) However, Deacon has matured. Kudos to Sean Kanan for bringing complex layers to his B&B character.
