A Critic’s Review Of The Bold and the Beautiful: Rehash, Remind & Rewind

When it comes to The Bold and the Beautiful, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of B&B’s week that was.

Just when I’d written this week off as boring, regurgitated nonsense [I get it, RJ (Joshua Hoffman) is home, and Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) wants him to be a designer at Forrester Creations despite his son’s protests, and everyone except Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) is so super duper excited that he’s home; I’ve had it since last Friday’s airshow. It didn’t need to be repeated Monday, Tuesday, AND Wednesday!] Bold and the Beautiful went and introduced that mystery silhouette.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m sure that the reveal won’t live up to expectations. I was sitting there at the end of the week, debating the delicious possibilities — James Warwick (Ian Buchanan), Jack Finnegan (Ted King), Ryder — one of her plethora of children that are barely remembered and hardly ever mentioned — only to suddenly remember which soap opera it was that I was watching.

For over a decade now, B&B has been a show that tells you what it wants to be fact regardless of what you actually saw. Contradictions and flat-out retcons are the status quo.

Therefore, I have no doubt that Sheila’s (Kimberlin Brown) visitor will be some heretofore unmentioned “great love” that’s come to rescue damsel Sheila.

Further B&B Musings

* For over a decade now, B&B has been a show that tells you what it wants to be fact regardless of what you actually saw. Contradictions and flat-out retcons are the status quo.

The latest travesty? Having Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) explain to Katie (Heather Tom) that what he and Quinn (Rena Sofer) had was ever only sex when we the viewers know that to be a bald-faced lie.

* Here’s hoping B&B cools it with some of those more sappy music cues. To quote my boss, “That music at the end [of Monday’s episode when Brooke/Ridge/RJ/and Hope hugged] was a bit much. You’d have thought Jesus himself returned.”

* I hate to break it to Katie, but she DID say the word “love”. I heard her. My close captioning heard her. And Carter heard her too. This is a prime example of why you need a competent storyline/script editor on hand. It’s as if there’s literally no communication between writers and only a minimal attempt to keep major continuity from episode to episode.

* Is it just me, or did the editing/photo department do Atkinson and Noelle all kinds of wrong with that shot they chose for Ridge’s “family portrait”?

* It would probably behoove everyone in the writer’s room to cease reminding us that Hope (Annika Noelle) and Thomas share a brother, especially if they want to sell Hope suddenly having the hots for her former tormentor.

* Oh how I wish Steffy (Jaqueline MacInnes Wood) would have gone a bit father with her inquiry as to what brought RJ to town. Something along the lines of, “Must be something pretty big considering you couldn’t be bothered to visit when I nearly died and my husband was presumed dead.”

* So, Liam (Scott Clifton) doesn’t want to talk about the issue of Hope and Thomas “to death” huh? Could have fooled me. He’s only been doing that for…what? Three consecutive weeks now?

That said, what a pleasure it was seeing Clifton and Darin Brooks doing their thing. The Spencer brothers remain the most realistic, relatable siblings on all of daytime.

* Thomas: I’ve changed! Really I’ve changed! And yet, at the first available opportunity, he makes sure to pointedly point out that RJ is his HALF-brother and doesn’t even attempt to hide his disdain over the prodigal Forrester’s return.

* While I appreciate his hardline stance against involving himself in his extended family’s drama, what is the point of reintroducing RJ if he’s not going to be yet another artificial spoiler for the Taylor/Ridge/Brooke drama or a random rival for Thomas? It’s not like there’s anyone of RJ’s generation for him to interact with, though I suppose they could lump him in with glorified walk-ons Zende (Delon de Metz) and Paris (Diamond White).
