Kate Linder Joins Soap Hub for a Fireside Chat
Kate Linder joined The Young and the Restless 40 years ago this year when she was cast as Katherine Chancellor’s (the late Jeanne Cooper) maid. For her first appearance, in fact, Linder’s role in the script was “Maid.” It wasn’t until after Cooper began calling her Esther that that name started showing up in the scripts. Over the years, Linder has been a mainstay on the show
Esther Valentine: “Dinner Is Served”
While her first words were “Dinner is served,” Linder has been involved with much more than presenting meals to Chancellor estate residents and guests. Esther and Katherine were kidnapped while the former was pregnant with daughter Chloe (born Kate played by Elizabeth Hendrickson). Also, Esther’s ill-fated romance with nefarious Norman led to the death of Kay’s beloved husband Rex Sterling (Quinn Redeker).
Kate Linder: Life Off-Screen
Off-screen, Linder’s a tireless champion of The Young and the Restless, promoting the show across the United States and in Canada. The actress received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 10, 2008, where then-L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Y&R co-creator Lee Phillip Bell, and Cooper spoke at her ceremony. Kate had roles in the feature films Hysteria (2012) and Erased (2013), Miss Meadows (2014), Garry Marshall’s Mother’s Day (2016), Voice from the Stone (2017) The Charnel House (2017), and Echo Boomers (2020). Linder’s next features are Charlie Matthau’s Book of Leah and Shriver.
Kate Linder’s Philanthropic Endeavors
On the charity front, Kate Linder was named celebrity spokesperson for The ALS Association in early 2005. Her late brother-in-law was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in December 2004 and Kate went to Washington, DC many times to lobby for more funds to fight this disease. Linder is also active with many AIDS charities, Habitat for Humanity, and the Los Angeles Mission.
In addition, Kate Linder has hosted three annual charity teas with a rotating group of her castmates, one for Canucks for Kids each July in Vancouver until 2020, and another two in Toronto and Calgary for March of Dimes Canada’s Conductive Education program for children and adults with neuro-motor disabilities, Also, Linder has proudly served as Grand Marshal for the Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now.
