Viewers of The Young and the Restless may not know that when characters talk to each other on the phone, the actors often shoot those conversations at separate times. However, that didn’t stop Courtney Hope and Joshua Morrow from showing a bit of playfulness between their respective characters, Sally Spectra and Nick Newman, in a recent episode.
Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) was discussing the dynamics she shares with brothers Nick Newman and Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) when her phone rang. “Speak of the devil,” Sally quipped to Chloe Mitchell Fisher (Elizabeth Hendrickson). “The devil — or the devil’s brother?” Chloe rhetorically asked.
It was Nick on the other end of the line. As longtime viewers of Y&R may have observed, Nick often uses the phrase ”Sup?” when greeting people. It’s short, of course, for “What’s up?” When Sally picked up the phone to greet Nick, she said, “Hey…’Sup?” Cut to a chuckling Nick, who picked up on his new girlfriend appropriating his often-used salutation.
Courtney Hope tells Soap Hub that not only was the exchange not scripted, but also the two performers didn’t even shoot the scene at the same time. “I asked if I could say, ‘Sup?’ and [the producers] said, ‘Yes,’ and so, it was added in,” Hope explains as she was preparing to tape her end of the call.
Before Morrow later shot his portion of the scene, he’d been told that Hope added ‘Sup?’ to her dialogue. So, he was able to have Nick let out a big grin. “Josh came up to me later and said, ‘I’m so proud of you,'” Hope shares. “He thought it was funny.”
The ad-lib speaks to the comfortableness Sally feels around the Newman heir (Nick, that is.) “Nick really brings out that playful joking side of Sally,” Hope says. “With Adam, it’s more ‘ride or die.’ There’s a little more levity with Nick. It’s more playful. Who knows whether that’s because it’s new or if it’s their particular dynamic?”
