“Calista,” Granddaddy stood up from his chair at the head of the mahogany table that took up most of the Briggs’ Construction corporate offices’ conference room. Lauren sat next to him, trying to keep out of the adults’ way.

“Jeremiah,” she acknowledged his gesture with a barely perceptible nod of the head and took a seat across from them.

Up to this point, Lauren had repeatedly been told what a knockout her mother was. She’d agreed because… well, because Polly certainly was pretty, there was no doubt about that. But now, Lauren was thinking that everything Polly did, from wearing low-cut, tight-fitting clothes that emphasized every bulging asset, to slathering her face in the most eye-catching makeup, to dying her hair a russet she claimed was supposed to match Lauren’s but instead merely looked inflamed, was the exact opposite of Calista Harrison.

Ms. Harrison wore loose, flowing fabrics, white linen pants and matching top, with just a black pearl necklace and bracelet to accent the outfit and compliment her ebony eyes. She paired them with mascara and liner only, no eye shadow, as well as the raven hair that flowed down to her waist. She was all crisp, clean angles, and lines, as opposed to Polly’s waves and curves. And Lauren couldn’t take her eyes off of her.

Maybe that was why Lauren failed to notice the second person in the room until Calista gestured to the figure taking a seat next to her. “You remember my brother?”

“Ares,” Granddaddy said, barely trying to suppress a smirk that made it clear what he thought of the ridiculous name.

“Harry,” the younger man corrected, his own expression betraying that they had gone back and forth like this many times in the past. And that he didn’t expect anything to change, but was determined to put up a ceremonial protest, nonetheless. “I prefer to be called Harry.”

“So would I, in your shoes.”

The man who preferred to be called Harry didn’t bother to reply.

He stood at least two heads taller and looked to be a good 10 years younger than Calista, but much broader shouldered, like a football player maybe. His hand-tailored suit fit him perfectly, but some 200 pounds of deliberately restrained, visibly humming energy made it seem like he was itching to burst out of it, not to mention the chair he was sitting in, at any minute.

His hair was dark like his sister’s, but already receding and starting to go grey. Maybe that’s why he’d grown a beard, neatly trimmed around his mouth, nothing up the cheeks; maybe he thought it made up for the lack of hair on his forehead?

“Harry just graduated from Harvard Business School,” Calista informed Granddaddy. “MBA.”

Another barely suppressed smirk from Granddaddy. Obviously, his opinion of a college degree was right up there with his feelings about Harry’s given name.

“Your daddy,” he informed both Harrison siblings, “didn’t need a degree.”

“We intend to avoid his mistakes.” Harry looked pointedly at Granddaddy. “All of them.”
