“Just go to hell, okay, Mama?” Lauren squeezed the bridge of her nose with two fingers. “I don’t have the energy.”

“You weren’t in on it,” Polly’s enthusiasm grew with every word, nay, with every syllable.

“In on what?”

“Your Granddaddy’s plan to force his way into Tom Ashley’s company. He didn’t have the money to do it the old fashioned way. And no bank would stake him. Granddaddy’s mortgaged to the gills. He needs a big hit and he needs it yesterday. The Harrisons cock-blocked him out of California, and most folks in Nevada have learned their lesson about working with Jeremiah Briggs. Utah was virgin territory. But he didn’t have the capital alone. That’s where you came in. Your job was trap Garrett Ashley. But, oh my goodness, you didn’t know a thing about it!”

“How would Garrett and I…”

“Well, I’m sure Jeremiah’s Plan A included the two of you in some tacky Las Vegas wedding chapel – a marriage of convenience. Jeremiah’s convenience.”

Feeling on more solid ground, Lauren smirked, “Anyone who put their eggs in a Garrett settling down basket was doomed to disappointment.”

“Oh, I’m sure Jeremiah realized that quickly enough. That’s why your little oopsie was good enough. I bet Jeremiah sent Tom and Garrett those papers outlining exactly what they expected in return for your blessed event before the stick even turned blue.”

“Granddaddy didn’t send Garrett any papers. Garrett and his father are the ones who served me.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure of that. Who broke the good news to our Daddy to be? You?”

“Well, no…”

“Bet Granddaddy said he did it for your own good. Or, better yet, he plead the Fifth and claimed it was all a misunderstanding?”

“I don’t believe you,” Lauren’s voice cracked.

“Ask him yourself.” Polly opened the door and gestured down the hallway towards the master bedroom. “Why don’t you pop in and ask your precious granddaddy all about how he pimped you out in the name of business?” This time, her mother’s smile was nothing but pure malice. “And then you go ahead and sign those inheritance papers. By golly, you sure earned them!”
