Sonny and Brenda – the mobster and the model. Their passion burned red-hot, but this General Hospital coupling was forever stymied by impulsively made decisions and a distinct lack of proper timing.
Sonny and Brenda were acquainted by virtue of their associations with Jagger Cates and Karen Wexler. However, they were not properly introduced until he gallantly offered to assist a frazzled Brenda with her copious amount of luggage. “I’m Sonny Corinthos”, he proffered. “And I’m leaving,” she responded.
But Sonny persisted, and eventually, he earned her hand and learned her name. He promised that he would see her later – but it was sooner than even Sonny suspected.
Playing With Fire
When she caught sight of him entering Kelly’s, Brenda confidently sauntered over to his table and began a conversation that vacillated between stealth interrogation (she wanted to discover who had killed Ray Connelly, a former Corinthos employee whose death was being blamed on Jagger) and overt flirtation.
Later, the overly imaginative Brenda retreated her new living quarters (at the Quartermaine mansion) and while luxuriating in her new, oversized bathtub, she indulged in a series of fantasies starring the most eligible Port Charles bachelors – and the one featuring a smart-mouthed, Tommy gun-wielding Sonny proved to be her most erotic.
Subsequently, the sultry brunette took every opportunity available to ingratiate herself to Sonny, and her efforts were certainly noticed. “Is danger what you’re looking for,” he asked her after a particularly coquettish encounter.
“Because ever since we first met, every move you made has been flirting with danger.” And it was danger that would leave them forever and indelibly linked.
A bullet he received in a shootout with Port Charles police officers (the result of his participation in the escape of prisoner Frank Smith) necessitated a blood transfusion and Brenda was all too happy to comply. In the procedure’s aftermath, Sonny cooed that they were, “connected now.”
An adventure in Puerto Rico saw the two run afoul of Rivera, a well connected Mafioso, and though the specter of Death loomed large, the amorous couple still found time to indulge in an intimate moment on one of the islands spectacular beaches.
Once safely ensconced back in Port Charles, Brenda succeeded in extracting both a promise from Sonny that he would renounce his ties to the underworld and an invitation to move into his apartment.
However, unbeknownst to Brenda, Sonny busied himself with the takeover of Frank Smith’s criminal empire. In a desperate act to prove her lover innocent of the deeds leveled at him by his myriad of detractors, Brenda wore a wire and attempted to get Sonny to speak about his work.
When he learned about her actions, Sonny threw Brenda out of his home and ended their relationship. In her grief, Brenda turned to charismatic billionaire Jasper Jacks. At first, their association was purely a means to an end. She wanted to make Sonny jealous and he wished to do the same to Lois Cerullo.
In time, a real romance blossomed. And yet, Brenda still wasn’t over Sonny. In the interim, however, he had been forced to wed Lily Rivera, and just when he decided to throw caution to the wind and reunite with Brenda, Lily announced that she was pregnant.
Jax surprised Brenda with a jaunt to Malibu and proposal – “Marry me, or you’ll never see me again.” Brenda said yes and uttered her “I Do,” at the exact moment that Lily’s death freed Sonny of his obligation.
Brenda subsequently endured a kidnapping at the hands of Sonny’s vengeful bodyguard, Harry, and when Sonny joined her in her makeshift prison – and it appeared they would never be freed – they made love.
The incident ended her marriage to Jax, and resulted in her agreeing to wed Sonny – though the ceremony never even started owning to the groom’s defection. In the aftermath of her humiliation, Brenda reunited with Jax and was then believed to have been killed in a car accident – luckily, such rumors proved to be exaggerated.
Though alive and well, Brenda had to contend with living as Luis Alcazar’s virtual prisoner and, once freed, she struggled to decide which man she wished to be with: Sonny or Jax. She chose the latter but kissed the former and her actions cost her dearly.
Seven years later, Brenda reappeared and both men fought to protect her from a European crime lord named The Balkin and became embroiled in the hunt for her biological son.
At the caper’s conclusion, Brenda and Sonny pledged their troths, but the union proved short-lived. There was one final attempt at reconciliation – three years later – but both decided to part as friends. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
