Drew’s actions on General Hospital have most of Port Charles up in arms. However, they’re not the only ones. GH fans were also taken aback by his drastic change into a rather nefarious character. But the viewers know full well that Drew is just a character played by Cameron Mathison. In real life, the actor is a nice guy who’s been super busy. He’s also had some difficulties in recent times, but didn’t let that stop him from opening up about them as he moves toward the next chapter of his life.
It Was a Tax Write-Off
As a guest on Maurice Benard’s (Sonny) YouTube mental health show, State of Mind, Mathison explained how he was very comfortable talking about the trials and tribulations in his life. “It’s been an especially challenging stretch the last, I guess, four years in total, but specifically the last couple months,” he stated.
Benard explained that he wanted to talk about Mathison’s previous soap character, Ryan Lavery, whom he portrayed on All My Children from 1998 to 2011. The actor stated that Lavery is a character he would still play today if the show hadn’t been canceled. Mathison explained that before getting the part on AMC, he had purchased a condo in Toronto and once went to visit friends in New York, planning to use the trip as a tax write-off.

Being Shirtless Helped Him
As a result, he visited an agent in New York who liked him and said, “I want to introduce you to Judy Wilson at All My Children. She’s the casting director.” He agreed to meet Wilson, not as an audition, but just an informal meet and greet, which he hoped would be fast, then he could party with his friends. Wilson asked him to do a cold read, which she recorded and said she would send to the show’s producers.
“From that cold read, [a] spontaneous moment of me trying to write off a trip to New York, I got a screen test on All My Children,” he stated. “I had my shirt off in the screen test and all that stuff, which should have been a big red flag.” Even though he was new at acting back then, he understood that the physical part of things would be key to getting a job in soap operas.
The character initially wasn’t Ryan, but after his shirtless audition, “I booked the role and then they changed the role to Ryan Lavery, who was a con man initially and super fun,” he remarked.
