General Hospital spent the June 15 episode moving a lot of pieces around the board. Nina realized Liesl had vanished. Valentin figured out Cullum’s timetable was moving faster than expected. Carly wanted to get moving before it was too late. By the end of the episode, everybody agreed that Joss and possibly Liesl were running out of time. The strange part wasn’t the danger. The strange part was that Carly actually suggested a reasonable plan, only for everyone to move on to something far riskier immediately.

Key Takeaways

  • Carly’s rescue plan centered on Sonny.
  • Valentin dismissed Sonny as too unpredictable.
  • Valentin removed himself from the mission.
  • The search for Joss and Liesl grew more urgent.
  • Sonny’s small army remained on the sidelines.

Carly’s Plan Actually Made Sense

After scouting Spoon Island, Carly (Laura Wright) suggested bringing Sonny (Maurice Benard) into the operation. It wasn’t exactly a revolutionary idea. Sonny has resources, manpower, and enough loyal people to create problems for just about anyone. If the goal was keeping Cullum (Andrew Hawkes) occupied while Carly and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) searched tunnels beneath Wyndemere, Sonny seemed uniquely qualified for the assignment.

Valentin immediately rejected the idea. He argued that Sonny is unpredictable. Fair enough. Nobody has ever accused our favorite racketeer of being cautious. Still, there is a difference between unpredictable and ineffective. Sonny creating chaos was practically the entire point of the plan.

Maybe Sonny starts a gunfight. Maybe Brick (Stephen A. Smith) appears with a small army. Maybe Cullum suddenly finds himself dealing with enough distractions that he stops paying attention to what is happening underground. None of those possibilities sound particularly elegant, but at least they sound like an actual rescue strategy.

Valentin Took Himself Out of the Game

Instead, Valentin decided the answer was turning himself in to the WSB. That immediately creates a new problem. The person with the most knowledge about Cullum, the tunnels, Spoon Island, and the larger situation voluntarily removes himself from the mission right when he is needed most.

The plan seems to depend on Carly somehow getting into Wyndemere, finding Joss (Eden McCoy), possibly finding Liesl (Kathleen Gati), navigating a maze of tunnels, and getting back out before anyone notices. That’s asking a lot from someone who was originally supposed to have help. It’s also asking viewers to believe this is somehow safer than letting Sonny make a nuisance of himself for a few hours.

By the final scene, Valentin concluded there was no time left and that surrendering was the only option. Maybe he’s right. Maybe Cullum moved things forward faster than anyone expected. Even so, it’s hard not to wonder if everybody overlooked the obvious solution sitting right in front of them. Sonny owns a small army. This felt like exactly the sort of situation where one might come in handy.
