Cameron Mathison is back on the daytime scene as General Hospital’s back-from-the-dead Drew Cain, a role previously portrayed by Billy Miller. He made his soap debut as Ryan Lavery on All My Children in 1997, a character he played until 2011.
The actor has led an interesting life, both onscreen and off, and we’ve got a refresher course on all of it. Here’s everything you need to know about Cameron Mathison.
1. An Ontario, Canada native, Mathison originally planned on pursuing an entirely different career path. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec in 1993, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
2. His career segued when he began modeling and doing commercial work. It led to Mathison taking acting classes. He made his feature film debut as a character named Atlanta in 54, the 1998 movie about famed New York City club Studio 54.
3. Mathison was named one of “America’s 100 Most Eligible Bachelors” by People magazine. He received the honors in 2000.
4. Two years later, on July 27, 2002, he took himself off the market marrying model Vanessa Marie Arevalo. The happy couple went on to have two children: son Lucas, born April 20, 2003, and a daughter Leila, born July 7, 2006.
5. Mathison is a cancer survivor. After being diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma in 2019, he underwent a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy and doctors removed a portion of his kidney along with a tumor. Fortunately, the cancer was not aggressive and had not spread.
6. He got the chance to strut his stuff in season five of Dancing With the Stars. Partnered with Edyta Sliwinska, he placed fifth in the competition.
7. Cameron Mathison freelanced at Good Morning America for years, before signing on as a regular correspondent in 2009. He’s worked at prestigious Hollywood events including the Academy Awards, Grammys, Golden Globes, and more.
8. The actor joined the digital world, hosting Ultimate Proposal in 2011. The Internet series, created by Yahoo, focused on a panel of experts who helped potential grooms create original ways to ask the women they loved to marry them.
9. Despite his success as a correspondent and host, Mathison continued to act. He inked a deal to appear in Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ Murder She Bakes, a series of movies based on the novel of the same title, in 2014. He worked opposite Days of our Lives star Alison Sweeney (Sami).
10. He returned to his roots in 2015, hosting the Canadian reality series Game of Homes. Based in Vancouver, the show featured couples renovating rundown houses. A companion short web series, Cameron’s House Rules, profiled Mathison doing renovation projects on his own home.
11. Entertainment Tonight hired Mathison in April of 2015. He began serving as a full-time correspondent and weekend co-anchor for the news magazine show.
12. He nabbed the gig of new co-host of Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family, opposite Debbie Matenopoulos, in 2018. However, the show was canceled after its ninth season and aired its final episode on August 4, 2021.
