Andrew Hawkes knew Ross Cullum’s time in Port Charles wouldn’t end well. Villains like Cullum usually leave General Hospital in a body bag or handcuffs. Looking back after his final episode aired, Hawkes reflected on the run that lasted much longer than expected, the cast he came to love, and why he would gladly return if the opportunity ever came around.

Key Takeaways

  • Andrew Hawkes’ GH run grew from a few episodes to about 40.
  • Hawkes knew Cullum’s exit was inevitable.
  • His final episode included stunts, location work, a helicopter, and John Oliver.
  • Hawkes praised his castmates, the crew, and GH fans.
  • He said he would return to GH in a heartbeat.

A Villain Who Lasted Longer Than Planned

Hawkes spoke to Soap Opera Digest about his time on GH, revealing that what began as a tiny role kept growing. “At first it was only supposed to be three episodes,” he said. “Then it was supposed to be six to eight episodes. And I think now, when all is said and done, I’ve done about 40 episodes!” He admitted Cullum’s exit “was inevitable,” adding, “I knew it was coming at some point.”

Even knowing the ending was coming did not make saying goodbye easy. Hawkes called playing Cullum “just an incredible experience as an actor at this point in my life,” then explained he “fell madly in love with the cast and crew.” He praised everyone behind the scenes for their work ethic and said being part of that environment felt like being on a team.

That appreciation carried into how he approached every script. Hawkes said, “As far as I’m concerned, we’re doing Shakespeare,” explaining that he gave the role the same commitment he would bring to any stage production. He believed everyone around him worked with that same level of dedication, which made the experience even more rewarding.

An Epic Goodbye And An Open Door

Hawkes said his final filming day left little time to dwell on emotions because the schedule was packed. He explained there were stunts, location work, a helicopter, and even a guest appearance by John Oliver, calling it epic. He also praised Ryan Paevey (Cassius), saying the two regularly rehearsed together before scenes and built a strong working relationship.

His appreciation extended across the cast. Hawkes praised Carlo Rota (Sidwell), Kelly Thiebaud (Britt), Chris McKenna (Jack), and several younger actors, including Asher Antonyzyn (Danny), Bluesy Burke (Charlotte), and Finn Carr (Rocco). He also spoke warmly about appearing on Maurice Benard’s (Sonny) State of Mind, saying the conversation about mental health meant a great deal to him.

After the whirlwind ended, Hawkes said he slept for 12 hours before reflecting on one of the highlights of his career. He thanked the cast, crew, and fans for embracing both Cullum and the person behind him, calling GH viewers the “Best damn fans in the business.” And if the show ever wants him back as Cullum’s ghost or somebody entirely new, his answer is yes.
