A Plea To Give Sonny and Nina’s General Hospital Romance A Chance

The fans of Sonny Corinthos and Carly Corinthos are large in number, very vocal, and know what they want to see on General Hospital. They’ve built up over the decades that the two characters have been in and out of each other’s lives. They’ve seen their faves go through rough patches but this time feels different.

Perhaps it’s because Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) have been together for a much longer period of time recently but it feels like they are completely resisting the show exploring what Sonny went through after having amnesia for nine months and living life as a different man — Mike. Like it or not, one of the things he experienced was feelings for another woman — Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros).

While Sonny and Nina (Sona? Sina?) has developed their own burgeoning fanbase, there is still a large segment that is very vocal about wanting this story to be killed. Yet this same fanbase would be very upset if Benard, tired of doing the same thing year after year, decided he needed to find his change outside of Port Charles.

Even the strongest of Sona fans probably realize that Carson is General Hospital endgame. That said, it’s wonderful to see Benard and Watros get to mix it up and play something different. This will also propel Wright to get to do something else — hopefully keeping this extremely talented actress happy on the ABC soap as well. While fans may like to see a couple happy, it doesn’t always give actors much to do.

Over the years, Carson has faced losing their son, losing their best friend (a couple of times), mob threats, and other things that weren’t caused by one of them straying. They have met each challenge and come through stronger than ever. And this new threat wasn’t caused by an issue in the marriage either — it was the twist of fate.

Will they eventually reunite? More than likely. But in the meantime, all three actors in this story appear to be enjoying the heck out of it — almost as much as most of us have watching them do it.
