Here’s How Y&R Should Handle Danny And Christine

The last word from Danny and Christine on The Young and the Restless is that she won’t be joining him on tour like they’d previously agreed upon because a client desperately needs her. Danny smiled understandingly. Christine sighed bravely. They both prepared to go off on their separate life paths…off-screen. So what’s the point?

For the past few weeks, we Y&R viewers were forced to watch the umpteenth version of Danny (Michael Damian) wants Christine (Lauralee Bell), but Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) wants Danny, and she’s happy to pull all sorts of stupid stunts to get him. Been there, seen that.

Was there ever any tension to this triangle? It’s not like there was ever a minute, over the past thirty years, when Danny truly loved Phyllis. At best, he tolerated her as the mother of his child. At worst, he took Daniel away from her — even knowing he wasn’t the biological father — because he saw Phyllis as a poison no child — or adult — should be forced to brush up against. Danny never loved Phyllis. Danny always loved Christine. It is not exactly edge-of-our-seats drama here.

Throw Them a Bone

We suspect Damian will leave (at least for a bit). We suspect Bell will leave. So what harm would it have done for the show to send them off into the sunset together? We don’t know if Channy has a lot of fans. But we are willing to bet money that there is more of them than there are Phanny fans.

Why couldn’t Danny and Christine have gone off on tour and then — weeks, months, years — later, bring them back and pick up the triangle where they left off? It’s not like Phyllis is going to get saner in the interim. Whenever Danny and Christine return, Phyllis will still be there to pull fire alarms, bug out her eyes, and play the victim. Why not give them and their fans a little happiness in the meantime?
