Grey’s Anatomy is known for having some of the most devastating deaths of all time, but there are a few that definitely gutted us more than the rest. Whether it’s a surprise death or one we all saw coming a mile away, the sadness overwhelmed us all the same.
Though it was hard to narrow down, here are the five saddest Grey’s Anatomy deaths of all time. See if our list matches up with your list!
5. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane)
When Mark moved to Seattle, most people were not fans of his. He was cocky, which definitely turned a lot of his fellow doctors off. But, as the seasons went by, he proved himself to be a good boyfriend, a good dad, and a good friend. His death left fans heartbroken, but it was nice to think he was probably with Lexie in the afterlife.
4. Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan)
Though Denny was never a major character on the show, his death really left people all shook up. His relationship with Izzie Stevens, though completely irresponsible, was actually very sweet. He was a good guy that was taken way too soon, but at least he was able to make a return in Season 5 as a ghost!
3. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh)
Poor Lexie! While it took fans a while to warm up to Meredith’s younger half-sister when she first arrived, her eventual death following that terrible plane crash was truly devastating. She and Mark Sloan finally realized they were soulmates right before she passed.
2. George O’Malley (T.R. Knight)
George’s Season 5 death was the first time an original cast member’s character died tragically. George’s death was even more gut-punching because being hit by a bus was so disfiguring, he wasn’t recognizable for most of the episode — not until he wrote 007 on Meredith’s hand did anyone know who he was.
1. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)
Fans of Grey’s Anatomy are still devastated over Derek’s death in Season 11. Not only was his death totally avoidable, but he also left Meredith a widow, having to raise their children on her own. While it was sad to say goodbye to McDreamy, it was even harder to watch Meredith’s total heartbreak.
