Dustin Diamond, best known to a generation of TV fans as Screech on Saved By The Bell has died from cancer. The actor was 44.
Multiple outlets are reporting that Diamond died today, February 1, in the morning. He had been taken off breathing machines in an effort to go into hospice care. His father and his girlfriend were by his side when he died.
A few weeks ago, the actor completed his first round of chemo following a diagnosis of stage 4 small cell carcinoma, which is commonly known as lung cancer. Diamond sought medical aid after feeling pain through his body.
Screech’s real name was Samuel Powers and he was the best pal of series lead Zack Morris played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar (mixed-ish). Diamond played Screech for four seasons during which time he lusted after Lisa Turtle played by Lark Voorhies (ex-Jasmine, The Bold and the Beautiful).
Diamond reprised Screech for a short-lived spinoff titled Saved By The Bell: The College years. The actor also appeared in Saved By The Bell: The New Class as Mr. Belding’s (Dennis Haskins) assistant.
The actor wasn’t included in the show’s revival on Peacock, however, he did amass many other credits throughout his career. He appeared as a groom in the 98 Degrees music video for their song “I Do (Cherish You).”
He also appeared in two episodes of The Wonder Years and made headlines for appearing in a sex tape, which he directed, but he later stated that he did not appear in the video. It was a stunt double. Diamond appeared as himself in reality series including Celebrity Boxing 2 and Celebrity Fit Club.
Last month, Diamond’s Saved By The Bell co-star Mario Lopez (ex-Christian, BB) reconnected with Diamond following his cancer diagnosis. “I connected with Dustin earlier this evening and although the news of his diagnosis is heartbreaking,” Lopez posted on Instagram, “we remain positive that he’ll overcome this. Praying for him & his family and for a speedy recovery. God Bless.”
The actor was predeceased by his mother, who died from breast cancer. Entertainment Hub sends sincere condolences to Dustin Diamond’s family at this difficult time.
