At a glance, Don Johnson and Below Deck’s Captain Lee Rosbach seem alike. Both men rock a salt-and-pepper look. They’re also the self-proclaimed “Stud of the Sea,” according to fans of both shows. But did Captain Lee inspire Don John’s character as Captain Massey on Doctor Odyssey?

The cast debated about this possibility in an interview with Us Weekly. After all, Below Deck came out long before Doctor Odyssey chartered the waters. The show’s star, Joshua Jackson, delivered a hot take. He believes that Captain Massey inspired others like Captain Lee.
“I’m about to pay you a compliment here,” Jackson told Johnson. “I think that the Stud of the Sea studied Don Johnson. Don did not study the Stud of the Sea.” We could see Captain Lee giving off Crockett vibes. He does like a suit without socks. Johnson agreed with Jackson’s sentiment. When he’s not acting, he spends a lot of time on the water. “I’ve done quite a bit of work on the water and racing—also filming on the water, for that matter. So I have an easy relationship with [the water].”
Johnson noted that he’s “always had a natural ability for authority and in expressing it.” This has been conveyed in some of his most iconic roles on Miami Vice. He’s also the type of actor who can command any room. He just gives off that kind of presence. “That’s what I do. I would like to say that most people pay attention to me for that,” Johnson added.

Former Stud of the Sea
Doctor Odyssey premiered in September 2024. It broke records on TikTok and Hulu. Meanwhile, Below Deck premiered in 2013. Captain Lee stepped back from the franchise after suffering several health issues. Sadly, he’s no longer declared the Stud of the Sea. But he will always be the OG in our hearts.
Some Bravo fans have given that title to Captain Jason Chambers. But just don’t tell him about it. The Below Deck Down Under star recently admitted that being a sex symbol kind of makes him cringe.
