Days of our Lives brought the devil to Salem. And we’re only now beginning to understand the full extent of his powers. The devil can’t just get Doug Williams committed, Ciara Brady Weston pregnant, and turn Susan Banks into a black cat, he – in the body of Marlena Evans Black – can also split Kristen DiMera into two!
Stacy Haiduk began playing the popular role in the summer of 2018. She was the Kristen that put on a Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker) mask (and, presumably, bodysuit) to seduce Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) and get pregnant. She was the one who reunited with Brady and Rachel – and the one who let her jealousy drive her over the edge, leading to kidnapping and murder and exile and arrest. In all sorts of orders.
However, Kristen being with Brady always rubbed some viewers the wrong way. Not just because she is criminally insane, but because we remember when Kristen was dating John Black (Drake Hogestyn) – and playing Mommy to teeny, tiny Brady.
That’s why it made kooky, vintage, perfect sense when the devil chose to torture a tied-up John… with the Kristen he – and we – remembered…the one played by original Kristen (and Susan) Eileen Davidson.
Having two Kristens in the same episode was a big risk. Which paid off big. Days of our Lives has always been a show that took wild and bizarre chances – The Garden of Eden? Alien twins? New Salem? Some of them work. Some, not so much.
But one of the main features soaps have going for them is the ability to show real flashbacks. Not old actors in your people make-up. When DAYS brought back Davidson as John’s Kristen, they were able to show us flashbacks of their first meeting and more. That’s worth any suspension of disbelief!
