Soap writers sometimes get lost in their own creations. They will follow one storyline down the wormhole and lose sight of some of the players in the vast canvas on which they are working. Talented thespians are placed on the back burner twiddling their thumbs, aching for a juicy story that their character can step into the spotlight for. Here are a few characters who are most in the need of a Bold and the Beautiful storyline in 2022.
The Bold and the Beautiful: The Fashion Wars
Living in the past is not healthy, but it is hard to watch a current episode of The Bold and the Beautiful and not long for the storylines of days gone by. Stories like the original recipe Sally Spectra (Darlene Conley) and Saul Feinberg (Michael Fox) whipping up a new fashion line to give Forrester Creations a run for their money. Or Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery) facing off against Sally. The Forrester boys fighting, literally, over the same woman; first, they competed for Caroline (Joanna Johnson) and later, Taylor and also, Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang). Where are the runway shows, the catfights, stolen designs, boardroom wars, social issues, and international locations (oh, right, COVID–we’ll cut you slack on that last one)? These are the things that set B&B apart from other soaps and made it an international success. While we can’t dwell in the past, can we at least evolve into the future with a bit more substance?
Speaking of wars, where is Bill Spencer? Whether locking horns with the Forresters or wooing the ladies, Don Diamont always manages to garner full attention as the no-holds-barred businessman, Bill Spencer. Love him or hate him, his larger-than-life presence is sorely missed. You never know what he will do next and that is what we like about him. Surely, Bill will be back to stir up some trouble at work, tango with his sons’ lives, or try to win back the affections of his beloved, Katie Logan (Heather Tom). The Bold and the Beautiful is more interesting with Bill Spencer in it.
Katie is another on the canvas who we sorely miss. B&B writers can work magic for the ‘damsels in distress’ storylines and the youngest Logan sister is one of the recipients with her heart transplant storyline. Who can forget her brother Storm (William deVry) committing suicide to give Katie his heart? And the character, played by five-time Daytime Emmy award-winning actress and fan favorite, Heather Tom, is no victim. She will go toe-to-toe with the best of them and hold her own. We need more of that!
Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis) is a character that many fans can identify with. Often overshadowed by her older sister, Brooke, and preoccupied with her younger sister Katie’s well-being, Donna is the character always on the lookout for her soulmate. Fans are invested in the unlucky in love lady finding her prince and, lord knows, we need a grand love story right about now. Let’s hope the writers get the message and whip something up soon.
The Bold and the Beautiful Honorable Mention:
When Alley Mills joined the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful as Stephanie Forrester’s younger sister, Pam Douglas, it was like a breath of fresh air had landed in a smog-ridden Los Angeles. Mills added comedy, sensitivity, and depth in every scene, stealing hearts and collecting a fan base along the way. And when Pam found love with security guard Charlie Webber (Dick Christie), fans were delighted. Since the loss of Stephanie on the show, the character of Pam Douglas has reminded us of the importance of smiling. A little comedy — and some lemon bars — go a long way in the midst of the cutthroat world of fashion.
