Y&R Star Eric Braeden Talks Victor Newman’s Inability To Let Work Go

Y&R star Eric Braeden recently appeared on CBS’s The Talk where he discussed his on-screen alter ego — The Great Victor Newman. Victor is supposedly retired, but The Mustache can’t keep his hands out of his business empire for long.

Eric Braeden on why Victor Can’t Let Go of Work

In the clip, which you can see below, The Talk co-host Sheryl Underwood asked, “Is Victor really letting the kids take over?”

After a dramatic pause, Braeden replied, “No, I mean a little bit, you know. But I’m watching like a hawk. One misstep…can’t let go,” which likely means that both Victoria Newman Locke (Amelia Heinle) and Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) should watch their backs at work.

Braeden continued, noting of how his experience with fatherhood does not follow that of his powerful on-screen alter-ego’s. “I think it’s difficult for some fathers, powerful fathers, to let go and let their children, their sons or their daughters take over, very hard. In real life, not so hard.”

He shared that his son, Christian Gudegast, “chose a totally different profession” than his, and instead of acting, Gudegast became a writer and director. Braeden shared, “my son asked me to play a little part” of his upcoming film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.

One Take

During his appearance on The Talk, Eric Braeden also shared that most of the time in daytime television, actors film every scene in one or two takes. That means he often runs dozens of pages of dialogue in one day.

“What people don’t realize about daytime, we do this stuff in one or two takes…The most I’ve ever done in one day was 62 pages of dialogue. So you just cram in between scenes, you just cram, but it keeps your mind sharp,” the soap vet said.
