The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 2020 WGA awards. Three out of the four network soap operas have received a nod for their work over the past year in the Daytime Drama category.
Soap Operas Honored
The trio of soaps up for the honor is Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, and The Young and the Restless.
The DAYS nominated writers are: Lorraine Broderick, Ron Carlivati, Joanna Cohen, Carolyn Culliton, Richard Culliton, Rick Draughon, Dave Kreizman, Rebecca McCarty, Ryan Quan, Dave Ryan, Betsy Snyder, and Katie Schock.
The GH nominated scribes are: Head Writers: Shelly Altman, Christopher Van Etten; Associate Head Writers: Anna T. Cascio, Dan O’Connor; Writers: Barbara Bloom, Suzanne Flynn, Charlotte Gibson, Lucky Gold, Kate Hall, Elizabeth Korte, Donny Sheldon, and Scott Sickles.
The YR nominated writers are: Amanda L. Beall, Jeff Beldner, Sara Bibel, Matt Clifford, Annie Compton, Christopher Dunn, Sara Endsley, Janice Ferri Esser, Mellinda Hensley, Lynn Martin, Anne Schoettle, Natalie Minardi Slater, and Teresa Zimmerman.
Startling Ommission
Surprisingly, The Bold and the Beautiful, which submitted an entry, did not receive a nod. This year, the show shot to the top spot in the coveted Women 18-49 demographic courtesy of the show’s front burner ‘Baby Beth/Baby Phoebe’ story for several weeks. With compelling long-term and dynamic dialogue, this omission strikes us as, quite frankly, odd.
Traditionally, writers submit actual scripts of three episodes, not DVDs or videos of air shows, which are used to determine the winner. General Hospital has won the WGA Award for Best Daytime Drama writing for the last five years in a row!
The WGA Awards began recognizing daytime dramas in their awards starting in 1973. That year, the nominations went to Love of Life (which won), The Secret Storm, and Where The Heart Is.
Winners will be announced in simultaneous ceremonies held in New York City and Los Angeles on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Soap Hub congratulates all the shows on their nominations and will report on the winners next winter.
