Y&R spoilers are leaving us to scratch our heads wondering what the point is of Mariah Copeland and Baby Aria moving in with Devon Winters, Abby Newman, and Toddler Dominic while Tessa Porter is out of town. First of all, moving with a baby – and all that baby stuff – is a really, really strenuous effort, especially if it’s only for a few days, a few weeks, at most. And second, because it’s difficult to suss out where this story is going. Even if you think you know, we’ve got you one better:
The obvious setup here is an affair. Devon (Bryton James) and Mariah (Camryn Grimes) have been involved before. They dated during his, “I am so totes over Hilary” phase. And they’re still best friends. Not to mention that Mariah gave birth to Devon’s biological son, Dominic. With Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) out of town for who knows how long, and Abby (Melissa Ordway) so forgetable that Victor (Eric Braeden) barely remembers she’s a Newman when doing roll call of his favorite children, would it be so surprising if Devon and Mariah were to pick up where they left off, horizontally speaking?
No, it wouldn’t be surprising. But it would also be boring. And predictable. So, why not go in the completely other direction? Mariah doesn’t fall in love with Devon again. Mariah falls in love with Dominic. All over again.
After Mariah gave birth, she still felt attached to the tot she’d nicknamed Bowie in the womb and fought so hard to keep safe during their kidnapping by Stitch. Mariah had a difficult time giving Bowminic up. Abby basically told her to get over it.
Abby probably thinks they’re even now, since she has Dom, while Mariah and Tessa have Aria. But, Aria, we’ve been informed out of the blue, has a hearing loss. And now Mariah is all worried about how she will bond with her daughter if they don’t have music in common.
So what if, while staying with Abby and Devon, Mariah continues to grow more and more alienated from her little girl, and, instead, finds herself drawn to Dominic? Who responds to her in a way Mariah fears Aria never will. She can start neglecting Aria and glomming onto Dominic, to the point where Abby wants her gone, Devon defends his old friend… and then Tessa comes home. Now we have a story! And a point to both Aria’s deadness and the new living arrangements.
