Y&R spoilers would like us to believe that, now that she has weaseled out of jail time yet again, Phyllis will straighten up and fly right and never cause any trouble or shriek about how the world is against her, ever again.

But does that sound like the Phyllis we’ve watched for multiple decades? This is a Phyllis who has blown second – and third…and fourth… – chances. It’s only a matter of time before she does it again.

Y&R: Change Is in the Air

Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) assured the judge that all she needs is the opportunity to prove how much she’s changed. She conned the judge into believing it. She conned Heather (Vail Bloom) into believing it. Daniel (Michael Graziadei) and Summer (Allison Lanier) will be a tougher sell. Not to mention Jack (Peter Bergman), Diane (Susan Walters), and Kyle (Michael Mealor). But the person Phyllis really needs to convince is herself. And that’s a tough one.

Y&R Spoilers: The Spirit Is Willing

Sure, Phyllis may say she wants to change. She may even think that she wants to change. But what, in her behavior, is suggesting that she’ll be successful? Even when sobbing and whining and lying to the judge, Phyllis was lying to herself. She really believed what she was saying. She really believed she was not just the victim, but also the martyr. Phyllis did nothing wrong, but here she is, willing to take punishment if only it will protect her precious children. Have you ever met a more saintly woman?

But the Flesh is Weak

Except that Phyllis’s self-deception proved that, as always, Phyllis is always her own worst enemy. She doesn’t see reality. She sees the world through the lens of Phyllis First. And if that continues, how long until she decides she’s perfectly justified in committing some other crime? She never does it for herself. She always does it for her loved ones. Why does no one understand and praise her endlessly?
