Mariah Copeland had a few figurative mountains to climb as she and Tessa Porter found each other on The Young and the Restless. In real-life, Camryn Grimes, who plays Mariah, knows a thing or two about climbing. She recently talked about how climbing can be for both physical and mental health for this week’s installment of Soap Hub’s Wellness Wednesday.
After Cassie Newman went to that great soap in the sky and before she made the scene as her long-lost twin Mariah, her portrayer, Camry Grimes, stayed busy helped folks reach new heights. “I used to work as a rock climbing instructor,” the actress tells Soap Hub. Grimes adds she wasn’t always involved in such athletic endeavors. “I didn’t really do sports when I was growing up. Acting took up so much of my time.”
However, after Grimes was introduced to rock climbing, she connected to it. “It really connected me to my body for the first time in my life,” she says. “It’s such physical work, but it’s also a puzzle. You’re scaling it physically and it’s mentally stimulating. Everything fades away when you’re on a wall. All you can do is solve the next problem [in front of you]. It may not sound peaceful, but it is.”
Are the different colored rocks on rock climbing walls just for show or is there a rhyme to their reason? “They’re coordinated routes,” Grimes explains. Even though she’s back to acting full time, Grimes says she still climbs and hopes to do even more. “I’m trying to find my passion for it again. Actually just went with Robert Adamson [ex-Noah],” she shares. “He’s my rock-climbing partner.”
In addition to rock climbing, Grimes says she works out by hopping onto her Peleton bike. “I love it,” she says. “You jam out to the music. You [can] stay home. I’m very lucky I have that. It came in handy when COVID started.”
Grimes knows that a healthy body goes hand-in-hand with a healthy mind. “I just started meditating,” she shares. “My fiancé and I are on a little bit different schedule. We’re both actors. We can be all over the place. I’m the early bird. He’s a bit of a night owl. We have a system with our animals where I do the morning feeding. He’ll do the night ones.”
The actress says that when she’s up early doing the feedings, she’ll do some guided meditations. She’ll do five or 10 minutes. “Doing that usually gets my energy up [so that I can] get on the Peleton,” she says.
On the scheduling side of her diet, Grimes says she doesn’t officially do intermittent fasting, but her life tends to work out that way. “I don’t naturally eat until 11 [a.m.] or 12 [noon],” the actress shares. “I don’t like to eat before I work out. I don’t strictly do intermittent fasting, but I kind of naturally fall into a window usually because of my schedule at work. I am trying to get a healthy relationship with food and not ever ‘diet.'”
