The Young and the Restless recap for Wednesday brings something that shocks almost nobody — Phyllis Summers is alive.

Young and the Restless Recap Highlights

Daniel struggled to come to terms with his mother’s death as Danny, and later Lily comforted him. Summer (Allison Lanier) put the blame squarely on Diane as Jack and Kyle urged her not to say things like that. Nate and Elena wondered what led to Phyllis’s collapse. Chelsea invited Billy upstairs…but not like that. Now let’s dig deeper into what happened.

Young and the Restless Recap: Daniel Mourns Phyllis Summers

Danny (Michael Damian) tried to get Daniel (Michael Graziadei) to calm down and stop threatening Jeremy (James Hyde), but Daniel wasn’t too interested in listening to his dad. Danny urged his son to accept that Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) was gone. He wouldn’t do that, though.

Ultimately, Daniel blamed himself for his mom’s death. Of course, Danny said he wasn’t responsible. However, Daniel knew he’d treated his mother horribly. Danny encouraged his son to remember the good times and hang onto those memories. Instead, Daniel insisted that he’d only remember how much he’d hurt his mom.

Danny told Daniel to do something to get out of his downward spiral and then get some rest. Daniel reluctantly agreed, and he apologized to Danny for acting like he was the only one grieving. When Daniel took a shower, Danny called Lily (Christel Khalil) to help Daniel.

When Daniel got out of the shower, he was surprised to see Lily. She let him know Danny had called her, and Daniel was glad Lily was there. Unfortunately, Lily understood how it felt to lose a parent. She explained that losing Neil felt like the end of the world. Daniel also asked how it felt when Dru died, and Lily remembered how they’d never found her mom’s body. She encouraged Daniel to let go, and he didn’t think that’d be too easy.

“Grief is love with nowhere to go,” Lily said.

Lily reminded Daniel that he had people who loved and supported him as he grieved. She said she thought of her parents dozens of times daily and that it became more bearable as time moved forward. Lily encouraged Daniel to get some sleep, and she said she was going to stay with him. As he restlessly slept, Lily crawled into bed and held Daniel.

Young and the Restless: Summer Tells Off Diane

At the Abbott house, Jack (Peter Bergman) and Diane (Susan Walters) worried over Phyllis’s death. Ashley (Eileen Davidson) walked in, and Diane told her to keep her dislike of her and Jack’s engagement to herself. Ashley said she was heartbroken over Phyllis’s death, and Kyle (Michael Mealor) walked in.

Everybody wanted to know how they could help Summer, but Kyle didn’t know. They updated Kyle about how Daniel went off on Jeremy, and Ashley pointedly said that marrying somebody who was universally hated wasn’t a great idea. Of course, Diane was offended, and Ashley told her they should put their differences aside for Summer.

Ashley went upstairs, and Kyle thanked his parents for setting aside their differences. Summer came downstairs, and Diane said she couldn’t imagine how difficult it was. Jack and Diane promised to get to the bottom of the whole thing. Diane said she was sorry that Phyllis paid the price, and Summer told Diane that she’d caused all of it.

Summer reminded Diane how she’d wished Phyllis dead, and she yelled that Diane didn’t like her mom. Jack begged Summer not to do it, and Summer refused. She called Diane a monster, and she blamed Diane for taking over Phyllis’s life. Kyle apologized to his mom, saying Summer didn’t mean it, but Summer said she was telling the truth. She accused Diane of being happy that Phyllis was dead.

Diane said she never wanted harm to come to Phyllis, and she regretted the words she’d said. Kyle convinced a sobbing Summer to go upstairs, and she said she didn’t think she could do this for the rest of her life.

Jack told Diane that Summer needed somebody to blame, but Diane wondered if Jack felt she was responsible for what happened to Phyllis. Diane needed to hear the words from Jack. She swore that she had nothing to do with what happened to Phyllis, but she wanted honesty.

Jack admitted that he didn’t believe that Diane had anything at all to do with Phyllis’s death. She cried as they hugged. He said that Jeremy had a hand in what happened to Phyllis, and he wondered what they should expect. Diane said it’d be more mind games, and Jack promised he wouldn’t get away with it. Jack declared his unshakable faith in Diane that nothing could change.

As both her children grieved, Phyllis waited in a seedy motel room. Someone let themself in and she exited the bathroom. “Took you long enough,” she said, admonishing the mystery person.

Y&R Recap: Phyllis Summers Dominates Conversations

At Society, Elena (Brytni Sarpy) and Nate (Sean Dominic) felt like they’d let Phyllis down even though her death was an accident. Neither could understand why Phyllis even passed out in the first place. Elena said they owed it to Phyllis to get some answers. Neither envisioned the gala ending up this way.

Elena said Phyllis’s death had put things in perspective for her, and she pointed out that they made a great team working together. Nate let Elena know they’d always be a team, even though being a doctor was part of his past.

She let Nate know that she supported his change in jobs, but she didn’t want it to change him. Nate asked if she was worried about Victoria, and he let her know that they’d be fine. Elena wanted to walk home, and she encouraged Nate to go home without her. After he left, Elena searched for JT Hellstrom.

Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) ran into Billy (Jason Thompson) at Crimson Lights. She seemed worried that he’d stayed there zoning out since she left, and Chelsea demanded Billy tell her what was wrong. She worried he was upset about their kiss, and Billy said he didn’t feel bad about it.

Unfortunately, Billy relayed the news of Phyllis’s death to Chelsea. She expressed her condolences to him, and they talked about how it happened. Billy seemed numbed by the news. Chelsea pointed out that at one time, he loved Phyllis. He remembered how they’d finally arrived at a decent place with each other despite all that had gone wrong.

They talked about how Genoa City without Phyllis would be quieter, and Chelsea said that she’d made her mark on the city. Billy apologized for the night ending with them talking about a friend passing away. Chelsea invited him upstairs…to sleep…alone…on her uncomfortable sofa. Billy took her up on the strange offer.
