One of the major storylines on The Young and the Restless centers on Nick’s addiction to fentanyl. But the real problem isn’t just the street drugs. It’s about Nick’s obsessive need to be the hero and take down his archnemesis, Matt Clark.

Key Takeaways

  • Nick is addicted to fentanyl.
  • His compulsion to control the situation involving Matt Clark and protect his family.
  • Nick could spiral into a mental obsession that could go too far.

Relieving the Pain With Power

Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) addiction spiraled after his car accident. Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) strangled him from the backseat, which caused Nick to lose control of the vehicle and crash. There’s nothing worse than losing control of the one thing you fear.

Nick ended up in the hospital and was in severe pain from a broken leg. He demanded that the nurse give him prescription medication. Despite suffering serious injuries, Nick snuck out of the hospital in a desperate attempt to get revenge on Matt.

He needed to retain control again. His main goal was to take down Matt, even though he was physically unable to do so. When Nick’s doctor refused to refill his prescription medication, he turned to street drugs, which were peddled by Matt.

Nick turned to fentanyl to channel his pain into power. Every time he got high, he felt empowered and emboldened to take down Matt. It gave him the courage he needed to face his biggest enemy.

Feeding the Addiction of the Hero Role

As Y&R viewers already know, Nick is considered the “hero” of the family. He’s fed on that identity to a dangerous extreme. He believes that he’s the only one who can handle the threat Matt poses to their family.

Nick’s obsession with seeking revenge has caused him to act aggressively and erratically. He’s ignored his physical pain and mental health so he could satisfy his needs for power and control. The one thing that Nick hates is being out of control, especially when Matt’s around.

Even while Nick attended an outpatient recovery program, he focused all of his energy on Matt instead of on his sobriety. This could lead to a dangerous and deadly spiral.

Nick’s unable to think about anything other than Matt Clark, which has fueled his dependency. This obsession could set him up for a potential overdose or relapse that could give him a rude awakening before it’s too late.

At first, it seemed like Nick had turned a new leaf. He confessed to his mom, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), and his sister, Victoria (Amelia Heinle), about his addiction. He realized that he needed others to help him, not the other way around.

However, Nick’s underlying issue is his need to let go of his fears about Matt, which could destroy him. Nick needs Adam (Mark Grossman) and Victor (Eric Braeden) to help him fight this battle… Or it might be too late.
