In the September 3 episode of The Young and the Restless, Mariah did something Daniel never asked her to do. She gave him permission to reconnect with Tessa, even encouraging him to play music with her again. The surprising part wasn’t Daniel’s reaction. It was what Mariah’s willingness to say it revealed about how much her thinking has changed.

Key Takeaways

  • Mariah tells Daniel she understands that her absence affected Tessa and everyone around her.
  • Daniel admits he misses Tessa and that spending time with her helped him feel ready to live again after Heather’s death.
  • Instead of treating their friendship as a threat, Mariah encourages Daniel to reach out to Tessa and even make music with her again.

Mariah Stops Making Daniel the Problem

Mariah (Camryn Grimes) could have kept her conversation with Daniel (Michael Graziadei) polite and superficial. Instead, she deliberately brought up Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) and acknowledged something much more uncomfortable: her own actions had consequences.

Therapy has apparently helped Mariah accept that while she was unavailable to Tessa and Aria, the people she loved were entitled to their own reactions. That doesn’t mean everything that happened during that time was easy for Mariah to accept. It does mean she’s starting to recognize that she doesn’t get to control what Tessa needed while Mariah wasn’t there.

That shift matters because Daniel and Tessa’s closeness once represented everything Mariah feared she might lose. Now, Mariah is no longer treating Daniel as though his very presence threatens her marriage.

Daniel Never Asked Mariah to Approve

Daniel didn’t come to Mariah looking for absolution or permission. In fact, he seemed almost uncomfortable admitting that he missed Tessa and valued the connection they had built.

Mariah was the one who kept pushing the conversation forward. She told Daniel that if he missed Tessa and their friendship, she understood. Then she went even further by suggesting that he call Tessa and possibly play music with her again.

That’s what makes the exchange so revealing. Mariah wasn’t responding to a request from Daniel. She was voluntarily removing herself as an obstacle.

Mariah and Daniel Are Both Trying to Live Again

The most meaningful part of their conversation came when Daniel explained what his friendship with Tessa had actually given him. After Heather’s death, he hadn’t felt ready to move forward, but spending time with Tessa helped him feel as though he might be ready to live again.

Mariah understood that in a way Daniel probably didn’t expect. She explained that when she’s at a crossroads, she reminds herself that she gets to have a life when Cassie didn’t. Daniel said he tries to honor Heather in much the same way.

That common ground makes Mariah’s invitation feel like more than a reluctant acceptance. She isn’t merely tolerating Daniel and Tessa’s friendship because she thinks she should. She’s beginning to understand why it mattered to both of them.

Mariah gave Daniel permission he never requested because the permission was really about Mariah herself. She no longer needs Daniel to stay away from Tessa in order to feel secure. For perhaps the first time, she can acknowledge what their friendship meant without treating it as something that was taken from her.

Of course, since this is a soap opera, it’s hard to look at this scene that showed growth and not worry that it will end up leading to Tessa cheating with Daniel.
