The Young and the Restless stars Peter Bergman and Susan Walters recently talked about Diane Jenkins’s return to Genoa City, and what it might mean for Jack Abbot and their son Kyle Abbott.
Both Bergman and Walters visited The Talk on Monday, April 18. They each had plenty to say about the legacy and return of the supposed-dead Diane. It’s no secret she did plenty of bad deeds during all her years in Genoa City.
“She did so many horrible, terrible things and she wanted to escape,” Walters said on The Talk. “And then [Diane] came back on the show, that was a different actor that was playing her then, and I played her 20 years ago. So then, I came back on the show to redeem all that.”
Peter Bergman also had plenty to say. He shared how he learned about the return of his on-screen alter ego’s son’s “dead” mother. “They let me know in the coolest way. I was out for a while with an eye injury, and I’m at home and I get a call from the head writer and the head of daytime television for CBS, and they share this with me, and I said, ‘I’m gonna cry.’ This is fantastic, this is a brilliant idea.”
Susan Walters added, “I have to say, for the last 20 years, I really missed not working with Peter. I really missed it, and a lot of things he told me 20 years ago have held true for me, I’ve held them in my heart…I’m just trying to redeem myself right now so I can get back to being sassy Diane.”
Of course, that doesn’t mean that all of the old Diane is gone. “She’s made horrible mistakes and feels horrible about them and is truly trying to make amends,” Walters noted. “I don’t think that means she’s had a personality swap.”
It seems highly unlikely that Diane doesn’t have some plans up her sleeve as to why she chose now to reveal herself after being believed dead for so long. As for how Kyle (Michael Mealor) reacts to the news, Bergman hinted that both Jack and Kyle may have a difference of opinion on how to handle his mother, which could make for some explosive scenes between the two.
