Viewers of The Young and the Restless know that Chance Chancellor is walking a fine line between adhering to the letter of the law while keeping his family relationship with the Newmans cordial. Conner Floyd recently spoke with Soap Hub about how his on-screen alter ego is dealing with the pull of his inlaws while knowing that something just isn’t right with Ashland Locke’s death.
“Chance is in a pickle right now,” explains Floyd. “He’s dealing with the two things that I think he probably loves most — justice and law enforcement, bringing peace to the world in whatever he’s doing, and his family.”
That family part of the equation will likely be a sticking point for Chance, especially given his recent history with Abby Chancellor (Melissa Ordway), and upsetting her family — Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) in particular — could be rough.
Chance “has been trying to play catchup with his family,” Floyd points out. “Make amends with Abby, and make sure to be the best husband, the best father that he can be because he knows that he missed out on a lot and he’s been kinda slackin’ in a lot of different departments.”
Of course, those family obligations conflict with Chance’s strong work ethic at this moment in time. “He’s been really committed to work, too…he’s a perfectionist and wants to be the cop, the best detective he can be. Now both of those loves in his life are kind of clashing,” Floyd notes.
“Chance sees everything,” says the actor. “I think the biggest thing for him is he can kind of tell that something’s up. He’s just got this gut feeling that people aren’t being honest with him, and it’s people who are really close to him. It’s his family. I think he’s disappointed. He’s upset. He doesn’t really know how to feel because he knows these people who are really close to him — these people that he loves — aren’t being honest with him.”
Not only that, but Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) and Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) called Chance on purpose instead of 911 in general because he’s family. “They figured it’d go one way,” says Conner Floyd wryly.
Ultimately, much like Victor himself, family is important to Chance, but the more he looks into what happened the night Ashland died, the more difficult things will get for him in terms of figuring out how to balance his job and his wife’s family. “The more he digs, it’ll dig him deeper into this ditch he’s digging for himself,” Floyd predicts for Chance’s near future. “You can assume that there are gonna be problems for him.”
