In the May 19 episode of The Young and the Restless, Devon’s visit to Mariah at the mental hospital forced both of them to confront the emotional fallout left behind after Dominic’s kidnapping. While Mariah admitted she understood taking Dominic was wrong, even as her mental state deteriorated, Devon finally revealed the truth underneath all his anger: part of him blames himself for not protecting his son.

Key Takeaways

Devon Finally Admits What Has Been Eating at Him

Devon (Bryton James) entered the hospital trying to stay emotionally controlled. He delivered Dominic’s letter to Mariah (Camryn Grimes), listened to her carefully, and initially kept the conversation focused on facts instead of feelings. That emotional distance slowly disappeared the longer they sat across from each other.

As Mariah apologized again for taking Dominic, Devon admitted he still could not process how someone he had trusted so completely could betray him that way. Mariah was not just someone connected to the family. She was family. Dominic loved her, and Devon genuinely believed his son was safe with her.

That betrayal still clearly feels raw to him. Beneath all the anger, Devon admitted he has quietly blamed himself ever since Dominic disappeared. He confessed that part of him feels like he failed his son by not protecting him from someone he trusted completely.

Mariah Stops Trying to Soften the Truth

Mariah spent much of the conversation explaining what was happening inside her mind while Ian Ward’s (Ray Wise) conditioning and hallucinations resurfaced. She described Dominic as becoming emotionally connected to safety and stability while she psychologically spiraled.

At the same time, Mariah also stopped trying to soften what she did. One of the hardest moments came when she admitted that, while it was happening, part of her understood that taking Dominic was wrong. She knew she was hurting people she loved, but she no longer trusted her own thinking enough to stop herself.

That admission made the conversation even more painful because Devon could see how aware she actually was underneath everything else. Rather than asking him for forgiveness, Mariah focused almost entirely on his pain and repeatedly encouraged him to stop burying his anger before it destroyed him emotionally.

Devon’s Guilt Is Now Impossible to Ignore

Once Devon admitted he blamed himself for what happened to Dominic, the conversation shifted completely. Mariah immediately pushed back, insisting her choices were not his responsibility, but Devon has not separated her actions from his own guilt as a father.

What made the scenes land emotionally was how exhausted Devon sounded throughout the conversation. He was no longer simply furious with Mariah. He sounded emotionally drained, overwhelmed, and stuck inside the guilt he has been carrying privately for weeks.

By the end of the visit, Devon admitted he would try to forgive Mariah and accept her apology. Mariah, however, made it clear that forgiveness alone is not enough. More than anything, she wants Devon to stop punishing himself for what she did.
